BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SHADING:

Light and Shadow:

Shading is about seeing images / life in terms of black, white, and all the grays in between. A very common mistake which beginning artists tend to make is to jump straight into color with very little understanding of what lies behind color: VALUE. A deep understanding of VALUE is one key concept which separates a beginning artist from an experienced one. So it’s time to delve into an understanding of VALUE and what components make it up.

Shading is made up of 5 key components:

1. Highlight – Where the Light Source hits the form or figure directly – the brightest area on the form or figure

2. Form Shadow – The General Shadow cast over the form or figure – the Darkest Part of which is the Core Shadow

3. Core Shadow – The Darkest part of the Form Shadow

4. Cast Shadow – The Shadow cast by the form of figure on the Surface Plane (floor, table, etc.) upon which the form or figure is sitting / standing

5. Reflected Light – The light bounced back onto the form or figure by the Surface Plane (floor, table, etc.) upon which the form or figure is sitting / standing

Seeing Values: Tips for Seeing Light and Dark Values:

Please note that where I say "Desaturate" I should have said "Grayscale the Image" as they are two different things. The following article (http://www.inkjetart.com/tips/grayscale/) describes the difference between Desaturation and Grayscale:

This isn't a finished piece, but basically the method is the same until you finish ~ go back and forth between ADDITIVE and SUBTRACTIVE painting methods until you are happy with the results. Remember that if you ever want to completely darken or completely lighten the WHOLE image, you can either create a new layer and fill it with a low opacity Black or White Value, or just take the whole image and adjust the Brightness / Contrast. Play around with different settings and see which tools you like.

To add texture to a painting using Blending Modes:

Create a Layer above your Original Layer (I always Name Layers to keep them straight) and call it "textures" or something you can easily identify.

Use a textured brush such as the one in the example (really, you can use any brush, I would just experiment and play with different brushes to see what you like best) and create your own textures on the "textures" Layer.

Set the Layer's Blending Mode to something you like ~ Hard Light, Screen, Overlay ~ these always come up with interesting results, but it all depends on what you've got on your Layers ~ *hint* Shift + = toggles through the Blending Modes.
