View Full Version : bad normals(or something) when mirroring a mesh

I have the following mesh fully uv mapped(first pic) and just need to duplicate particular faces and mirror them accross. This is all cool in theory, but as soon as i try to recombine the seperated meshes it goes haywire(pic 2). I've checked the normals and the opposite flag, no probs there. And i dont know what else i COULD check, ive tried deleting history, freezing transforms, eliminating any sort of hierachy surrounding it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, the files also there to play around with - I've got the original mesh as well as a seperated version in that file for your convenience.

Something else funny i noticed - the model wouldnt respond to soften/harden normals whatsoever, could this be related?

naturally when i get frustrated by something all day, 5 minutes after posting for help i figure it out. For anyone else who has this bizarre problem:

The vertex normals were bein a bit funny, after combining the mesh i just selected set to face, and then just did a soften/harden and it was all cool.

No idea why it wasnt responding to soften harden in the first place though - if anyone can explain that that'd be awesome
