View Full Version : How to render an ambient occlusion pass and comp it
grimmud 04-28-2006, 11:11 AM forgive my stupidity but is it easy to render an AO pass of a scene or is it complex work in the hyper shade ?
also how would i comp this pass with others in After Effects ?
Any tutorial links would be a great help
Thanks

after u finish ur scene and render it, save a copy of it.
make a white blinn shader and assign it to all surfaces in the scene.
select ur camera and goto environment in its attribute editor, change color to white
turn on final gathering in MR and render out an image. (some trial and error with final gather values might be needed to produce a good result)
now in aftereffects put the ambient occlusion pass (final gather) on top of ur rendered scene and make it multiply or whatever looks good.
theres a tutorial on 3Dtotal.com now. check it out

It is very easy if you use the new render layers introduced in Maya 7. No Hypershade work or any shader assignment required.
Just select the objects in your scene including the lights and in the Render Layer palette click the button that says “create a new layer and assign selected objects”. Then right click on the new layer and choose Presets > Occlusion and that’s it.
If you batch render, Maya will create in the Images directory, one directory with the master layer frames and one with the Occlusion layer frames that you can import in After Effect and blend them as already Ooz suggested.
If it is a still frame, May can automatically composite the renderings just with Render View without using any external compositors. To do that, first for the Occlusion layer select Multiply from the pop up menu in the Render layer’s palette, then make sure that Render All Layers from the Options menu is checked.

And just to add to what Emil3d said, once you've set up the occlusion preset, you might want to up the Samples on the mib_amb_occlusion node, because the default 16 is a bit noisy.

... Then right click on the new layer and choose Presets > Occlusion and that’s it.

Just follow Emil3d's post carefully. If you look in the help docs under Render Layers there's quite a bit of information there too. You'll need to create a render layer to access the presets.

""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
To apply a layer preset
In the Render Layer editor, select a layer.
Right-click the layer and select Presets > Name of Preset.
Alternatively, you can select the layer in the Attribute editor, click the Preset button, and select a preset.
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
When you right click over a render layer the Presets submenu is the 5th item in the menu. If you have hard time finding it use the Alternative method suggested in the Maya Help above.
There are many ways to open a layer as a tab in the Attribute Editor. Just a couple of them: the last item from the right click on the layer menu called Attibutes… will get you there. Another way is to select an object from you scene that is in that layer and from the Inputs button on the status bar (the icon that is a box with an arrow going into it) select the little box next to the Render Layer item.
