View Full Version : Faces with zero map area Problem
InvaZimm 04-28-2006, 03:36 AM I'm trying to clean up a model and have got it primarily finished except for one thing. I've run the Polygon Cleanup Tool in order to only select any problematic areas. I have some faces that were selected with the Faces with zero map area option. In order to make sure that these newly resulting faces were mapped I ran Automatic Mapper on them, then placing them back into their specific positions with the rest of the already placed shells.
After running the Cleanup Tool once again I still receive the same results. In order to check this I went back and used the Automatic Mapper once again, then ran the Cleanup Tool once more without moving the UV's . This actually results in no selected faces.
I've never come across this before so was wondering does anyone know of a reason why this is happening and what's the best way to work this problem out? Thanks.

Been spending the last few searching everywhere, trying all kinds of things and have yet to prevail.. Closest I got was course objective list for some class and also I came across an earlier similiar post here, about a couple months or so old.

However, it was kinda incomplete. The suggestions in it were pretty much the same as what I've been trying:
get the problem faces
Auto map them
reposition the UVs
etc.
and for some reason the problem is still occurring.

Well, what’s happening only makes perfect sense. Maya is telling you that these faces have no map area in the UV editor. The auto map is fixing it for you and giving some UV real estate to those faces by spreading their UVs apart over the UV map, but you after that are going and repositioning the UVs as they were originally - apparently on top of each other and thus eliminating their UV map area again.

I think I see where you are going with this, but how would you go about "cleaning" that area of UV space so that they aren't negating each other?

Although the Cleanup command helps you to find the faces with 0 map area, “cleaning” those faces from the Cleanup command, means deleting them, which is a wrong idea. If you are going to texture those faces, you need to give them some “territory” in the UV texture editor. You can do that with all the commands from the Polygon UVs menu and the tools in the UV texture editor.

I know that the Cleanup tool will delete the faces if you let it. I'm only using it to select the problematic areas.
What I meant by "cleaning" wasn't having the Cleanup tool do it for me, but getting rid of the negating uvs.
Tried deleting the uv's and mapping them, then repositioning them in place, still end up with the same result.
