hi,
have a problem here that drives me mad...grrr
the using of 3d texture "cloud" in envsky node that is plugged into the IBL node of Maya Mental Ray, doesn't creat any visible clouds. But if using a 2d texture "fractal" instead of "cloud" these fractals are visible as clouds although they don't give satisfying results. Does anybody know a way to make the clouds work in the "cloud 3d texture > envsky > IBL" chain? I tried to scale the 3d Placement node but it didn't help and yes, the "use texture" is turned on.... ;-)
will appreciate any help.

did anyone ever made this work? IBL with envsky and cloud texture? Please help or point to a tutorial, as i couldn't find any usefull tutorial myself. btw, i also tried the alias tutorial but it only considers the workflow for imageplanes. any hints are gratefully appreciated!

just found out that IBL eats only 2d textures, not 3d textures, what a pitty! Are there any 2d textures clouds for maya?

Well any particular reason you need to use a procedural texture? Perhaps you can go with a panoramic picture or an HDRI. Are you using the texture to light your scene or is this just for reflections?

There are a ton of free HDRI maps around the net. A quick search shows these. (http://www.google.ca/search?hs=2BE&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=free+hdri&btnG=Search&meta=)
Or if you dont need a dynamic range you can map something like this pic (http://www.accustudio.com/exchange/textures/backgrounds/sky_panoramic/Spherical_Sky_02.jpg)

Hope it helps.

thanks for replying and for the links, i will check them out, but in this case i really wanted to give it a try with procedural textures and using them for lighting. Unfortunately ibl works only with 2d textures like the "fractal" 2d texture. But fractal does not look very real. So i was wondering if there is a 2d cloud texture somewhere available.....

znull... cloud texture is a fractal cloud, why do you think
it is so real ? also ever heard about baking textures ? :)

sure, "cloud" is a fractal texture! but comparing it with "fractal": it has more cloudy parameters/settings to adjust. so, the result is always better. my idea by using procedural textures is to be very flexible with cloud adjustment. as far as i can see you can get quite nice results with the cloud texture and some tweaking of its parameters, at least when using imageplanes. So if you don't have very good and neutral high resolution HDRIs or Backgrounds, this could have been an "easy to go" alternative.
