I finally found some time to work on this contest. I'm quite behind so I have a lot of catching up to do. I hope everyone will comment on my work and help me meet the deadline. I'm a rookie in the CG Challenge arena so I'll need all the help I can get.

"Shipping Out" is a story about a pirate trying to prove himself worthy to be apart of the crew on his first stormy journey.

Beautiful picture
How you think you will have time to complete work up to dead line?

I have no idea... I'll just have to put in some serious overtime. Even if I don't finish, it'll be a learning experience for me so I'll just have to do my best and try to get the most out of this.

Nice. That is some good lighting and a lot of action.

Is there some forefront light source? I think that would make it pop.

I really like the fact that you can see his face. It is just REALLY boring to see somebody's back and try to relate to them.

Nice concept! You have a lot of works now. Good Luck

Barsavis.... yeah I agree with you. There should definitely be some front lighting to make it pop. Any suggestions as to where that light might be coming from?

And I'm glad you're feeling me with the character facing towards camera instead of showing his back.

I wanted to convey the fact that his joruney is not into the storm but more so of his job as a crew member and how he will contribute to the survival of the ship by handling dangerous tasks without fear as he faces them.

I would advise some lighting coming from low, by the ship. Keep it warm, like fire. Then, you could have some coming from one of his flanks. Make that cool, like natural light. You can go intense to make it seem like it is REAL bright, like lightning, or you can go subtle, and make it seem like the moon or starlight is coming through or reflecting off of the ocean.

Question: It looks like there is a flag way in the background by the sunset. Is this just an anomaly, or were you wanting something there?

Nah... that's not a flag... It's just some clouds that looks like a flag.

Just started modeling. Blocked out a low res character. The clock is ticking... so much left to do.

I don't see any issues. Looks like it should work well.

What is your plan for A: Hair and B: Clothes? Do you have solvers for them? They are a total pain in the butt even with solvers. If you are planning on a cartoony look, you should be able to get away with just leaving it alone. If you were going for a more realistic approach, then you will most assuredly need to have a plan.

I guess I didn't have as much time as I had hoped for and due to this fact, this is as far as I can take my character model. I'll try to finish the challenge but it's not looking like I will.

I wanted to render it with GI mental ray but time was running out so I had to go with a regular mental ray set up.

I probably won't be adding too much post effects. I'll just be doing a straight forward compositing with individual layers on certain elements so that I can control the color correction.

About 21 years ago a man went on a journey out into the wide open sea. He was a naval officer who was part of a collective that ensured the safety of the crew. Although he left his home every few months, he made sure he retured home to tell his adventures to his son. That man was the person I knew as my dad. And as a young boy, I would listen intently to his stories.... and of course he would try to impress me by adding adventures to his rather normal journey.

One of such adventures was about his encounter with a pirate ship that saved his life. He told me about one particular pirate, a cadet pirate. This pirate was new to his ship and he single handedly was resposible for saving my dad's life on a stormy day. And to think he did it on his first journey out to sea as well.

I would sometimes think back about the stories he had told me and everytime I did, a new journey began for me.

Hi,
Not badly, but there are problems with a pose of the character.
It is a little not natural position of a back and hands.

Sorry it took me awhile to reply to you all. I was quite busy this past month. I barely had enough time to finish it. I'm not even sure if I made the deadline cuz I hit send exactly on the dot and the image finished loading after the deadline.

Does anyone know how you can check if you made the deadline?

CHAMP (aka Champwy): Thanks man. I almost didn't get it done. In the end I just wanted to send something in so I did whatever I could to finish it. What happened with yours? It's ok you can blame Yos for keeping you busy.

LUKE (aka Barsavis): As you can see I opted not to go with dealing with hair. I already didn't have enough time to begin with, so hair would have taken to much time.... time I didn't have. The same goes for clothes. I had solvers but didn't wanna mess with it. I also wanted a realistic look but I couldn't get the render done on time so I had to live with a cartoony look.

TOM (aka MonsitJ): Glad you like my concept. It's actually a bit deeper than I explained it initially. My dad was a sailor before so I wanted to do a fantasy journey that he might have been apart off. Anyways... I can't believe I got it done. It's not what I had in mind but with the little time I had ( You should know!!), it's the best I could do.

MAN (aka Manjang): I fought! I fought! And I got it done but I'm not sure if i made the deadline.... Anyway, I guess I'm just happy I turned in something instead of quiting. You should know also!! (See my reply to Tom, the end bit)

ANATOLI: Yeah there are a lot of issues that I need to work out. I just rushed everything towards the end. Thanks for your support and comments. I'll probably go back and try to fix all the things that need fixing now that I have more time.

Thank you all for your comments. It was a pleasure being apart of the challenge with all you talented artists. See you next challenge and I'll be sure to bring my A-game this time.

Lin
