View Full Version : Maya4.5 for Linux - weird problem @ startup
Faeroon 01-03-2003, 06:07 PM Hi all,
since last week I've got Redhat 8 as my main OS and of course I want to
work with Maya on it too *G*
So I've grabbed my Maya4.5 CD, installed everything (no problems @ all), rebooted and
tried to start it with "maya"
Maya startscreen pops up, Maya loads, Interface appears, I can read "preferences saved" in the lower right corner and WOOSH
- ITS GONE!! :surprised
Immediatly after the startup it shuts itself down and I have NO idea why! Absolutely no...
I asked every maya specialist I know and they all go: :surprised
If anyone ever had this damn prob and knows how to deal with it , please let me know!!!

if you can't find any solutions to your problem, try to change your OS !
lucky you are under linux, so you can try a different distrib.
try debian, slackware, or a different version of redhat !
i heard version 7.2 was the one alias suggest.

Hm... i thought they said it was RH8... damn...
RH8 - that's what the folks say which use Maya and which i know and they are not new to maya :-/
If I only knew why it's doing it!
There's NO error message, no "lib missing", nothing @ all...
I've even installed the newest nvidia driver for my GForce4 - nope, didn't solve it :(

First, start maya from the command line, then you will be able to see the error, since it prints it out in the console. Get in the habbit of launching it this way so you can get feedback from other things like batch render and any other crashes.
Second, maya 4.5 is only certified on RH 7.2 and 7.3. I have it working on RH8 fine here, but many people have posted on the different msg boards that they can't get maya to run and it is just giving a segment fault error. Some people have said that switching WM has fixed their problem. Metacity(RH8 default WM) seems to be the culprit. Also Metacity is pretty crappy at being customized, I couldnt even figure out how to reassign the keys in it so I could use alt/ctrl for viewport navigation. Try using another WM like Window Maker, Sawfish or KDE. It runs fine on KDE here, and people have posted on other boards that sawfish works fine too.

Hm...ok, tried to start Maya with the terminal
and that's what I've got:
**************************************************
/usr/aw/maya4.5/bin/maya.bin encountered a fatal error
Signal: 6 (Unknown Signal)
Attempting to save in
/usr/tmp/faeroon.030103.2223.ma
**************************************************
btw: I'm using KDE
Thanks for the site, going to read it right away...

After some days I now push it up again, 'cause
I still haven't found out how to get Maya to work :(
Noone seems to know the error, noone seems to have EVER experienced something like that - what is this? Some kind of linux n00b error that noone ever got? :surprised :annoyed:
Maybe someone has an idea, maybe someone can give me any hint - this HAS to work somehow and
I'm not willing to downgrade my entire system to RH7.3 (if thats the os for what it was made for) while other folks run Maya on RH8 without any problems...
Why couldn't this just work... :annoyed:

Check your logs, /var/log/messages, etc...
You should find some clues there. I would help you more, but im on vacation right now :P
