View Full Version : couple of questions about max
Br0nZiLLa 12-26-2001, 02:00 PM hello,
Im having these unanswered questions about max i cant find an answer to myself...which are :
1. How can u make an object more detailed (when rendered), i mean something like meshsmooth is there anything else that boosts the quality?
2. When ive meshsmooted something (iterations=2) then my pc cant handle it anymore, crappy movement(256DDR, tnt2 ultra deluxe +athlon 1400) how can i set the meshsmooth on and dont see the changes in my viewport but only when rendered.
3.When uve made a skeleton with bones can u make it do footsteps directly, just like u do with a biped?.
thnks for helping out...

Hello, here are some answers.
2.) Yeah you can have it meshsmoothed only when you render it and it won't show in the viewport. What you want to do is when you've applied the meshsmooth leave the interations at 0 but then there's another section under that that is not selectable, I think it says render or smoething like that, anyway check the box and then change this iteration value in this section to what ever you want. This is how many iterations you want of meshsmooth when it's rendered.
3.) As far as I know you can't do that footstep thing with bones that you can in Character Studio.
Hope I helped.

Just below where you crank up the viewport iterations, there's a checkbox for render iterations. Use that if you want it to apply it at render time

Dang I got beat to it :) Stinkin screen capture :D And about the footsteps, naa, there's no way to do that with the standard bones. As for question numba 1, I'm pretty sure there's no way to do anything like what your talking about. Try a different renderer.
Brazil (http://www.splutterfish.com)
VRay (http://www.chaoticdimension.com/forms/vraydlform.html)
These are two that I like a lot. Free trials (in a sense).

Another question is, how do i bind my character with the bones?? and how do i bind a biped to the character and then the skinmodifier, cous i can only add em with phisique, then trow a skin on top??

Physique and the skin modifier do the same thing (basically). I would recomend starting with the skin modifier because it's a little simpler than physique. Just select the mesh and add a skin modifier. Click the add bones button and select the bones you want to add. Then just tweak the envelopes to make it deform to your liking.
Physique works the same as skin with some extra features.

There's a way to get the answer to question #1. You can use displacement maps. They show up at render time, but if you're not careful you can watch your poly count go through the roof.....or it turns out not looking lke you want it. Controlling the deformation of the mesh can be tough because now you need to understand how your mpping is affected, and to what extent you need to subdivide the mesh. (Fun though) :D
