View Full Version : the first videoclip
Hi guys...
I'm going to make my first videoclip of my band...
Probably the camera I'm going to buy is XL2 canon...
The first question I have is about format.
When I shoot the clip wich aspect ratio do I have to use? 4:3 or 16:9?
And when I download the clip on the computer to make some effects and color correction, wich format do I have to use? I mean... I have to download from the tape the film, and then import in a software like shake.. and then reimport in an editing software and then generate the final movie. Which are the format (compression, size ecc..) for each step of this workflow?
sorry for my orrible knoledge about this material... i hope to learn a lot in less time!
really thanks!

You do not 'download' a film from the camera, you digitize. 16:9 or 4:3 is a matter of personal choice, but you won't be able to change it later without loosing picture data, so choose before starting to shoot footage.
First digitize into an editing app/(like Avid, FCP. Premiere).
Edit. Then export the parts(or clips) you want to add FX into a nonsquare, uncompressed picure format like Tiff or Targa. Be sure to leave some time for the handles(additional space at the beginning and at the end) in order to have the possibility to do minor corrections in the edit after reimporting when you have finished your FX work.
Export from you FX/compositing app(like Shake, AfterEffects and so on) in the same format you have exported, again uncompressed and with square pixels, import into your editing app, place the clips in the timeline and record on tape or export as a clip.
The rendersettings for your clip are strongly affected by the purpose(broadcasting, DVD or Web).
thanks!
but when i digitalize, as an example in FCP, it asks me for the fomat (DV PAL 48kHz, DV50 PAL 48kHz, DVCPRO PAL, DV to offlineRT PAL (photo jpeg)... which do I have to choose?
How can I export from FCP like a sequence off images? i can't see it in the menu export.
The render settings for my clip I hope it'll be for broadcast.
Thanks so much!

That depends on the camera you use, in your case(Canon XL2) choose DV PAL. 48kHz is the audio sample rate which is used for editing in general, so stick with it.
The offline option only does make sense when you do an offline edit in lower quality to save disk space.
edit: AVID offers a free downloadable glossary with the syntax used for editing, have a look at, it's very usefull to get familiar with this.

Thanks!
probably I'll be back for other questions!! :)

Because the XL2 has a 16:9 sensor onboard, you physically get a wider angle of view when you shoot 16:9. Whenever I can, I shoot 16:9 for the extra room, then when I drop it in my editor, I have the choice of keeping the 16:9 or I can crop it to where I want and it would be no different than shooting 4:3, other than it gives you some pan & scan room.
I have an XL2 (NTSC) and I love it very much. It is very flexible and it gives you a great picture with incredible sharpness and hardly any noise. (Depending on your gain) I almost never have needed to use anything other than 0db gain, which is nice. Remember gain=grain.
