Harrad 01-03-2003, 05:29 PM i've just got me a new DVD player. and i wanted to know what codec and where can i get it from to put a film on to cd to play it back on the DVD player. Also what size (px) would i have to put it in for a PAL TV.

you can buy 3rd party codecs, but typically DVD playing software will have them built in.
there's a free DVD playing program called "video lan". get it here:
http://www.videolan.org/
to take full advantage of PAL resolution, set your tv-out resolution to 800x600. any less and the PAL DVD image will have to be downscaled, resulting in some ugly aliasing.

yeah i just needed the codec to convert my movies from quicktime and divx to one that my DVD player can read. (forgot to put that its a TV DVD, stand alone one, not one on my computer)...

oh right, gotcha.
DVD "codec" is just mpeg2. encode any movie in mpeg2, and use DVD authoring software to burn it to a DVD, and your home DVD will play it.
