Hi all,
I know this is a strange question but I'm going to ask it. I think I'm a decent artist, I can draw and paint, and every once and a while I knock out something pretty cool(in my opinion)

I have been looking at Mark Behm's site (http://www.markbehm.com) and I'm dying to know what technique he uses to create paintings like these. I can't seem to figure it out, like what software, what brushes, the actual process. Can anyone point me in some direction.

Thanks a lot.

scanned sketches in either pencil or charcoal.

They are then painted over in color, either with photoshop or painter...and possibly both.

The painting technicues mimic traditional guache workflow...starting with a solid body of color and then painting 1-2 tones lighter and darker to get the range in values. (some of the sketches could pass for traditional media if they are not)

Because of the natural texture and wet look to the colors I suspect he uses Painter. The trick to his style is speed and profile. The coloring doesnt look like it takes more then a couple of hours and he leaves plenty of the original sketch to keep the energy.

These are concepts which are ment to be fast, and is also what makes them look so powerful in their simplicity.

Mark Behm just gave a demo of his concept coloring method at last Saturday's A Bunch of Short Guys (http://www.abunchofshortguys.com/Mambo4.5.2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=79&Itemid=1) meeting, here in the Dallas area.

"Mark will be talking about digital painting and development of the form of a character which up to this point has existed only in flat space outside of your imagination. Lighting, value & color, visualizing form and process will be discussed and demonstrated. The medium will be digital although the approach applies to traditional methods as well."

If I remember correctly, the scanned sketch he started out with for the demo was originally a pencil sketch that he xerox'd, changed the xerox (pencil or pen, I forget), and then rescanned. Doesn't really matter since he also did some corrections during the demo with Painter, although he did mention that he also works with Photoshop at times.

The digital painting demo took about an hour and a half, and was pretty close to the finished state of most of his concepts in his gallery, I think.

How he did it...pretty much like 2byts said. :)
