View Full Version : Matte painting/Concept painting
henrik 01-03-2003, 10:07 AM Hi all. After getting some nice response in the 2D section, I wanted to show this picture. I guess it goes under 2D as well, but anyways...feel free to move it.
This is a matte painting/concept painting I did recently. The idea was to create a temple within an interesting fantasy environment, quite like the stunning environments we've recently seen in Lotr. Think the yellow colors helps push this.
What I think is nice here, is the sense of mysticism and secrecy about this place. It's not too obtrusive(?)...rather a nice quiet place for the king and his people to rest...
I used some photographs, and some digital paint to complete this. I feel quite happy with the result. Tell me your thoughts, thank you.

Very good indeed,
Nice atmosphere and lighting.
It would definitely fool me in a Theater!
Only criticism is the greenery in the foreground center...the green mossy stuff looks a little "weird"
keep up the good work.

Thanks all, I'm glad you like it!
nimal> Where have you been my friend. Work is going well I hope?
William> From a small planet called "dream" ^_^
ThePuppetMaster> Sorry, I can't show you the plates. Most of the work was in putting all the different images together, and make it look like a whole picture, without any seams. The castle is entirely painted, so is most of the water and some of the grass in the valley...There's also paint to tie all the original photographs together, cut n paste alone won't do the trick.
Basically, there's paint and photos mixed all over the place...
Res is at film res, around 2k wide.

What can you say to help improve a beutifully composed picture like this? I wont even do an attempt.... :)
The thing that makes the picture EXTRA interesting is the "dead" tree in the foreground. Im thinking: Why is it there? There probably is trouble in the kingdom....It makes the picture tell more of a story. Well, I probably don't have to tell you this :)
The color and shape of it contrasts very good with the rest of the picture.
How do you go about it when you collect reference pictures? How do you keep this part of the job from not taking 300 days? I always have trouble finding good reference material....

Looks like paradise. This is incredible. I LOVE matte paintings, they are just so dang beautiful. Too bad I cannot paint!
Could you go into more detail on how you composited this? You mentioned using real photos and digital paint? Just curious as to how one would achieve such a result.

I went to your web site immediately after you posted the aircraft carrier, and THIS is the exact picture which caught my attention. It's really... shit, I can't articulate it. I'm speechless. You rock. Totally.
But like the others say - you HAVE GOT TO show us some WORK IN PROGRESS, we don't care if there's "paint and photos mixed all over the place", just show us SOMETHING!! ANYTHING!! (please?)
We're dying for it...

Beautiful. A wonderful piece of work. It's really great to look at,and that's the best compliment I can pay to someone.
I think the only way it could be better is if it was in real time 3D and we could see a fly through, with closer looks at all the beauty and some extra up close details of the castle.
Great work.

There is only one (very minor) thing that I could offer as critique here: the top of the dome melts into the much more distant background. I think it might pop into the center more with a subtle highlight (specular rim) responding to the the light source coming in from the right.
Like I said, very minor. Very beautiful image. I want to rent a room on the river side!

I'm totally blown away! Your colour is perfect, your composition is unbelieveable! I'm trying to get over that it isn't a photograph! I know its not, of course, hehe.
Btw, those other MPs in your site... have those been used in films of any sort? The reason I ask this is because of all the actors and all that.

Thanks again all!
I do agree to some point that the castle maybe should be more obvious, but I chose to "hide" it. The explanation is still I wanted to keep it quite subtle, and make everything merge...
About the castle perspective...maybe you're right. I think it's good enough as it is. Thanks for your point though.
Carl> Well it IS a photograph...It's based upon the plates. Can't show them though, they were given to me.
The ones with the "Mill" logo are done for "Pyramid", a one hour long BBC documentary/fictional film shot on 35 mm.
The new matte painting is a matte/concept painting for Framestore CFC, not used in film though.
The images have been used as prints in the book based on the film. Book can be found here. I did the cover as well.

Awesome. I do have a small crit though, but not at all on the painting. If you look at the dome of the temple it looks like it was saved as a distorted jpeg. I mean, of course you might have to do it sometimes, but it seriously deserves to be saved without any distortion. Good job though! :buttrock:

Heh.... Hard to make a specular highlight when the entire valley is in shadow :) Notice the sunline on the leftside mountain?
I think it is beautiful. I am always suprised how people have this and that to offer though. Always good I suppose, but it shows no one ever just takes in the beauty.

Matte refers to mask or alpha channel. In terms of classic visual effects for films backgrounds would be rendered with paint on glass with an area left blank so that a mask or transparent area could be created. In this transparent area live action could be optically printed through the glass plate. These effects were put to great use in the first Star wars movie. The scene were Obi Wan is turning off the tractor beam is a good example of this effect. The environment is a matte painting and the control panel is a set.
Even though optical effects such as this are used less than before the term has stuck.

..i got 2 crits....
1. seems the perspective of the foreground to background
is a bit off..more so with the trees on the left...the rocks seems not as much...it is because it appears the fg was shot
from below ...looking up...making the trees not exactly pointing
perfectly skyward....maybe a quick perspective [free transform]
would fix some of that in photoshop?
2. the lump of trees near the bottom left of the castle look
a little faded or erased with a soft brush, it gives it a bit away
where the seam is ....
thats it, nice work :buttrock:

AMAZING. This is art embodied or rather, empainted. Absolutely a mindblower.
And now, the crit:
All I can see, is the contrast between feel and quality between the rocks on the left and the background. It seems that the rocks are true picture, whereas the background (castle, river and everything else) have a more artistic feel to it. Could you explain which parts are drawn and which ones are photos?

01-06-2003, 04:22 PM
holy crap!!!
when i saw that pic on the front page i figured it was an article on the ROTK movie...............that is AMAZING WORK!!!!!
now take what you did and make them into alpha plates and do a forward push like you would see in an establishing shot like this.....add some footage of birds flying and the water moving........would be freakin sweet!!!!!
GREAT WORK Keep it up!!!!!

Awesome picture, the castle (perfect painted) is fully integrated. I notice a sharp transition from the "first plane" to the castle´s one, but well is to criticize for criticizing. ;)

ok, well the i should have (and is now) been an a
basically what i meant was......take the layers that it took to make the image....make them into seperate layers with alpha channels, then bring them into your favorite 2d composite app and do a forward push..........most establishing shots like this in a movie have a slow moving forward motion to the camera. using the foreground midground and background images at dif "distances" from eachother and have the camera push thru them making it look like a real scene.
it takes a lot more then 3 layers to really make it look convincing but you understand what i mean.
Its basically the equivellant of glass plate matte work......but now it is done digitally :)

very beautiful artwork.
the atmosphere is great its like a forgotten place found after several days
of travel in a deep forest (wow)
but for critic
i think you can work on the edge of the right cliff (the shape behind the tree).
and the shape of the left clif when its joining the ground.
if i were you (but i m not :))
i try to put a big tree on the bottom left of the image (something dark an massive)---->i think the focus point (the castle) will be enhanced.
anyway excellent work.
Im sure it rocks as much as the rest of your work, but the link to the image doesnt seem to work :(

Yeah i was looking at this thread yesterday and I was able to view your attached image, but today for some reason, it looks like a broken link.
Anyway, kudos to you, I love the image nice imagination, and colour work.
The cliffs on the left side of the image seem to be at the wrong angle to me though. To me they look as though you are looking
up at them (low angle), but combined with the rest of the, composition it seems unrealistic. (The angles)
