I just recieved 3d studio max 5 as a gift this christmas since I wanted to get into 3d modeling. I am very excited about it. I plan on devoting alot of time to it.

Ok, now to the question. Out of all the modeling techniques, which should a beginner start out with? I'd like to model various objects, possible a few scenes. I guess organic type objects.

I hope I was not too vague. If you need more description I will happily give you more.

Thank you for your time.

personally i found poly modelling the easiest to get used to. nurbs in max seem a little strange to me, at least after using rhino and a few other nurbs modelling apps. id say just give all of the different methods a try and see which one you like the best.

i still bust out the nurbs here and there for certain stuff [product modeling] but for char and organic, im pretty much 100% subd at this point

You should check out the tut book that comes with max.

In it they have low poly to patch modeling examples.

Thank you for your replies. I did manage to get a Discreet courseware book. That should have some helpful things. Although, it look's pretty much the same as the tutorial book that came with 3d studio. I'll give subd modeling a try and see how that works out.

Thanks again.
