FYI I'm working with 3ds Max, After Effects and Photoshop.

Right now I'm trying to create a shot that will require me to add in some CG fog effects in post. I'm not sure which is the best way of approaching this. I've fiddled around with some gradients and travel mattes but it fails to provide the fog with any kind of depth. This technique is also very time consuming and only works well on still shots. Is there a better way of doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey, dude.

I used After Effects to add the fog effects in some projects. You can try the Fractal Noise. And some gradient matte. Try to pick z channel.

When ya compose those layers try some different compostion method, just like softlight, lighten or else.

i can't sure whether it's the quality that you want.

what sort of fog? Are we talking a long shot with fog lying in a valley, a thick foggy street, a bit of fog emerging from a pipe, etc..?
And is there going to need to be object interaction with the fog?
And is the shot still, or moving and if so how?

Those will help us answer the question more specifically
