Finally! After too much thinking I finally got the picture out of my head and on to the screen...
My idea is that one journey is left behind, with many terrors and dangers and another one is just ahead(behind the 'camera'), with sunshine and everything nice. Maybe a bit girlish, but that's me...
I'm still trying to find a good feel of depth...

First color sketch... I had a dream of the main character having a lock on his heart and a key flying to him. That's why he's so happy...

what a cool looking piece, there are some interesting things going on with the composition and use of colour, it may need a bit of tightening yet but its a good start.

It's really nice to get comments, you're right about the composition, it really looks a bit scattered... I'll do my best to find balance with all the elements!

Hi Sirkku!
I like your piece a lot!:):) BEFORE I read your explanation of concept i just look at the concept and understood it perfectly!..:) The suffering expressions of characters i very, very good, it pass the feeling of they are running away from slavering in the fortress to freedom. The freedom key on the butterfly has a lovely touch, and gives the image a fantasy and magic sense, you can it girlish, but I dont buy that way..:) And the other key, on the bug pass the idea that freedom will not come so easy, it suggests if a key fits all, or if each character has his own freedow key and will have their own journey to have it, or they will all come togheter..
I think you can obtain the desired sense of depth with some mountains and working with colors.
:) Strong concept! Keep it Up!
Best wishes!

Starting the final coloring... I intend to put sunset-colors on the characters in the foreground... Then I'll see if this will work...

Thank you so much! It is really great to hear you like my concept and the little things I put in it... :) Thank you very much for the encouragement! I now added a key in the broken teddybear the main character holds, to suggest that the butterfly has the key to to big heartshaped lock and vice versa, so they free each other, hopefully... :)

This is the butterfly... I can't wait to start coloring the characters and flowers... This might end up a pretty rough painting in the end techniquewise, because i'm still learning, but I think it'll look happy. As long as someone smiles inside looking at this :)

Wow.. beautiful butterfly, theose wings are almost like stained glass, wonderful work! And the concept is really original, as are the character designs. My absolute fave is the gopher looking guy on the left, I just want to scoop him up and take him home, he's so adorable.
This would look fantastic if you corresponded the saturation of the colours of the butterfly to the locks and not much else, to make it really obvious what the butterfly can do for the creatures. I think they'd look great in more muted tones.
Just a suggestion though, I'm sure you have a final vision for this. I shall definitely be checking back on this thread for more.

Oh this is really fantastic Sirkku! Love the eyes of the creature clinging to the right side...he's precious. Also love the little critter on the key...wonderful detail. Looking forward to checking back for future updates. Good luck! (And thanks again for your kind words and suport -- much appreciated.)

Thank you! wow, great to hear you like it! I am definitely thinking of the same thing with the color-saturation. Maybe I'll put some sunlight on the main characters face(maybe some tears glistening in the light), but otherwise I'll try to keep everything else toned down...
By the way, I LOVE your work, especially the colors of the wind-piece(love the story)... Laughed my ass off looking at the AJ picture...(I totally get you, been there too :) )

Coloring needs more shape in the foreground... Testing some extra shine stuff.. But getting there... :)

Looking really lovely thus far! I think you're right about colour in the foreground. And I finally remembered what the guy on the left reminds me of! Did you ever see the original cartoon version of will o' the wisp? There was a dog like creature that looked similar to that critter!
And yeah, AJ was.. a blip... though I do still like their music *waves her 'latecomer to teenybopper fandom" flag*

I haven't seen Will' o the Wisp, probably not been on tv here in the north. Couldn't find pictures of the critter, it would have been fun to compare :)
I've drawn creatures like this before, not sure why :) I just love a cute little thing that has gone through a lot and still loves life...
Thanks for the support! :)

hmm... I wonder if this is better or worse than the last one which had more blue shadow? Maybe I should add some sunshine in the flowers or something... If you have any comments, I'd love some! :)

Its definitely coming on adnllooks better than last time i checked up. I wouldnt worry too much about the rays of light at the moment, if i had to choose though i would choose the 2nd.
Personally if I were use i would either keep the light looking kind of diffuse, like its coming therough clods or perhaps if you are into the shafts of light feel perhaps go with a tree dappled light look, like they are underr a small bush or something with the lighjt being broken by the leaves....i dunno really, good luck with the next two weeks though!

Thanks Vitreous! That tree dappled look actually gave me some ideas... I hope I can make this better. If not, better luck on the next image... :)

This is a story of a furry person called Putte, who has luckily escaped from a polluting factory, where they, with his kind, have been enslaved to make things for humans. Now when he is finally sitting on flowers after fighting his way through spiked bushes and cutting cliffs, he is oh so tired but oh so happy. Even the chains on him don't weigh as much, when he sees a butterfly carrying a key with her, with the same heart-shape as his lock. Freedom at last. All the bad things and dangers were worth it!
The butterfly is also chained, and even if Putte doesn't realize it, his puppet, who has sadly lost her head on the bushes, is carrying a key inside to free the butterfly!
Whatever the chains, we all carry keys to free each other and begin a new journey.
Dear Sirkkusylvia,
My goodness this is such a fantastic piece! The concept is just amazing (I really like the idea of finding freedom as part of a journey, as my piece "was" based on a similar theme. The reason I say "was" is because I can't complete mine..haha).
The colors are the best I've seen so far! I really love the different mixes of hues for the flowers and the manner that they are painted, which is so soft and dream-like, which is ideally contrasting to the darker (both litterally and conceptually) background where the factory lies. The characters are just so adorable as well, and their facial expressions are perfectly executed. I can really feel the sense of relief by looking at the character's eyes (which if I might add...are painted so soulfully and deep with life, which is why his feelings are portrayed so well!)
The composition is layed out very very well, with the placement of everything well thought out (the butterfly is lovely with all the bright colors and glows), whereby I can see everything clearly and understand the concept at a glance.
Last but not least, I would like to say that the guy hanging on the mountainside on the top right are of the composition is just killing me :) !The shocked look on his face is just humourous, a great addition to the entire piece.
Lovely work I must say, I'll try to catch up on your other artworks as well when I get the chance, hopefully in the coming holiday!
Take care and God Bless! (I'm sure you don't need any "good luck" wishes as I can see your completed work is perfect and doesn't require any of it..haha.)

Wow... thank you! I feel like I'm having the best day of my life after those comments... It's always a bit weird to look at a finished image, because you always get a bit bored with your own work after a while, but this made me really feel that I achieved what I was after. I'm just speachless... THANK YOU!
...I still hope to do better in the next challence... i think I'll try to paint people in that one, whatever it is :)
sunshine for everyone!!! :)

Eek! You're quick! - which is what I was thinking on Saturday, just didn't get to actually vocalizing it. Or did I? (I blame the self-inflicted sugarcoma of my amnesia.)
And yay, brilliant picture - flower-power and whatnot! Am digging the '60s - '70s wibe muchly. Good thing I wrestled you into this - though now I'll have to go and squeeze out something ugly to really let that butterfly shine.

hello there & thank you! The flower-power colors just wanted to come out and, again, I end up with something psychedelic... Unintentional, but here we are :)
And go go go with your journey, We must see it! :)

Hi Sirkku!!
I wish I could be as fast as you are! You already finish it!:) And the result are amazing!! Your image has that magic and fantasy touch that I imagined in the very first concept that you post! I love it!:applause: :applause: The characters expression and eyes are very, very expressive, and the flower garden colors is lovely!
Congratulations Sirkku!

Thank you Dalton! It has been inspiring to watch your painting evolve, I wish I had your skill in painting environmets!
I hope to do better in the next challenge, but I'm very glad to hear you like this one! :)
I finished it pretty quickly, because i realised, if I wanted to do better, I'd have to chance the concept and there was no time for it... So this was the best I could do this time :)
Thanks for the support! :)
