Neil Gaiman, alright! I've only read American Gods so far but i'm currently reading Stardust and after that its on to Neverwhere. I hope the painting turns out. Were you gonna do a cleanup or just leave it sketchy? Either way's good.

Hey guys! just blocked in the colors i wanted for the base, and started on Door, Richard, and little of Hunter.
Richard Mayhew is a London businessman stranded in the treacherous land beneath London known as Neverwhere. He's a sweet, simple kind of guy who wouldn't last two minutes if not for his companions.
Princess Door is on the run from Neverwhere's most ruthless hitmen, Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar, who slayed her entire family. But who do they work for? Door has the power to pass through anything as if they were doors.
freddy : Thanks! How's that Bionic Commando coming along? :)
Creeps : American Gods was awesome! I wanna do art of the old gods, especially Mr. Nancy, and I'm taking tiny, but too small steps in that direction. Have you read Good Omens? It's very funny. About the cleanup job, well, have a look.

Good stuff Snowfly. Coloring looks pretty good so far. The faces are well rendered. I hope you do some really dynamic lighting with the lantern.
American gods is a wicked book. I was also thinking of some designs like Mr. Wednesday and the Morticians(can't remember names). Can't wait to read Neverwhere now.

what software are you using to color? and do u have alot of layers or continue building up one layer from a base color to full shadows detail and highlights?

I'd like you to meet Hunter and the Marquis de Carabas.
Hunter is a no-nonsense bounty hunter, and the most reputed "body and snatch" in Neverwhere. She is an extremely beautiful woman clad in brown leather, with skin and lips like burnt caramel.
The Marquis is one of Neverwhere's shadiest figures. He hires out his talents (his immense knowledge and street smarts), usually at the price of the thing that is most expensive in the long term: favors.
Creeptown : Thanks again, Creeps. Yeah, Mr. Wednesday would be cool. I imagine he'd look like Mr. Gone from The Maxx, with a few minor changes. Yknow I had a thing for the lesbian girl Sam for awhile? hehe..hyperactive imagination.
Twisted : I'm using Painter 7 and a tablet. I have about 5 color layers now. I try to complete as much as I can in one layer, and add new ones if I'm not feeling too confident.
Generally, I paint in a base color (in this case, dark blue), block in the colors for the characters a little darker than midrange, add highlights, then shadows. I usually do color washes of different temperatures to separate the foreground from the background when I'm nearly done, then fiddle around with the details for a bit.

Its coming together man, though i advise you should start getting some of that lantern's light on everyone. Are you still gonna crop out the sides? I noticed you cut off Hunter's spear.

yo thx for the explination i just got a tablet and have been experimenting and facinated in other ppls technique. anyways the envrios not too bad i dont know about the dark blue (water i think) also maybe u wanna try to add a bit more compisition such as fore ground elements points towards characters ect
just a suggestion, something i learned when i was doing backgrounds.
keep it up peace

Almost done huh? I was never one for bg's either though they can really bring out a piece in the end. My only suggestion at this point is to crop the top, you got too much negative space above the characters. Aside from some more lighting tweaks, that's coming along.

Did some housecleaning on this thread..just noticed right above the 2D forum is the WIP forum. argh. latest updates above?
Twisted: thanks for the suggestions. This was an accidental piece..didn't start with any composition in mind, right now, i'm just having fun trying to salvage it. adding on the bg/fg elements should help.
checked out your site too...awesome 3D...the Viper. drool. For 2D art, ever been to conceptart.org?
Creeps: guess i went overboard with the empty space..i was thinking i'd put the beast of London in the background, just a silhouette with his eyes lit. But I cut down on it, like you suggested. was bugging me too ;)

here ya go freddy.
back to zero on the environment. needed to tweak the character posturing. Door and Richard are now striding forward, and Door has her arm locked into Richard's...I wish I'd done Richard looking around.

sorry snowfly..
I ment put more backlight on hunter ( chick with spear):)
but it's come along nicely
for the background (if you have time) maybe a gothic looking london ally way...or in some kind of hall way....dont know really..
never read the book...really I dont think you need one...but as Creepstown said they can really bring out a piece....
anyway it looks great you really know how to use thoughs shadow and highlights...

yeah freddy! you're right on the money with the environment ideas. the alleyway sounds so much more promising than the sewer, i think i'll be using that instead!
havent had time to work on the painting lately, as xmas break just ended and i had to rush some papers i've been putting off for days. expect to see some scratchings of a background next update, and thanks for the idea

Here it is, as promised! I roughed in the background, took a little longer than I would've liked setting it up *whew!* and it's still not perfect. Also reduced the lantern blaze a bit, I thought it looked pretty ridiculous.
I was looking for reference for a gothic London back way, and found a book on Pakistani architecture instead. Not the same thing, but I kinda liked the mood. Hope I pulled it off right.
This is my first environment, ever.

Yeah! Adding the background totally brings out this piece. And you got the lighting on the beams just right. The only thing i can say to make this piece better is to add more shadows to the characters in front. At least make their lower bodies darker if the lantern's the only lightsource. I think that would punch it out, cause you got the lighting on the ceiling bang-on but the characters in front seem so out of place.
Good Stuff. Keep it up!

yeah, snowfly
good stuff...:bounce:
the Pakistani architecture works really well...
not very good at bg myself, so can't really give you a critique..
I think you did a great job for it being your first bg ever...
keep posting!
