Okay it's a pic I'm doing in Illustrator CS2 with pen tool only since one week using a ref for the pose (Yeah I'm one of those vector fanatics) but I need some advices as I want this picture looks like a "professional" pic *totally crazy*:banghead:

There'll be lots of trees around, and sunlight from right. It's a very sad fairy with broken wings (also my very first fairy).. There's a story behind the pic I imaginated but too lazy to tell it there.

Just give me your C/C please, thanks ! :p

Yeah but if I export it, it won't be a vector pic at 100% then ;) hihi
Thank you ! :)

Okay a small update. I still have some shadows to add in the fabric, but I need to know if the foldings looks okay or not..:hmm: You can paint-over if you wanna help me, it doesn't bother me.

i agree! although this piece is awesome, i love your texturing. i personally detest illustrator but you obviously dont!! i particularly like your texture, and the only other thing i would say would be to add more depth. can't wait to see the background!

Sure I don't detest Illustrator, otherwise I will work with photoshop, but I don't have a tablet so I just can't sadly..
About depth yep sure ^^
Thanks !

I just noticed the eyebrow didn't make the girl very sad, but more astonished... xD So I changed that. lol

Very interesting, I am working on a Faery with a broken wing also. However mine is quite different from yours. This is great work, vectors always frustrated me, they seem to technical and mathmatical as opposed to photoshop which is more intuitive to me. Anyway you've got a really nice start here.

Vectors I find very useful for some styles.

Looking good btw!

I just found http://verucasalt82.deviantart.com/gallery/ might want to have a look and see it just for fun....I think thats a really extreme vector fanatic

Yeah I saw that you're doing a little faery with broken wings. It's nice we don't have the same storyline, otherwise I'd have  xD lol
Mmm yeah vectors are frustrating sometimes, but I love to use them.. though I don't really have choice since I don't have a tablet. In the future I would buy one and will work on photoshop.
Thanks btw.

Ahah yeah I know her, I watch a lot of vector artist on DA as I'm on DA too : http://zhaana.deviantart.com/.
I love this pic from this artist : http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/23596321/
Yeah we can do so many styles in vector, like with photoshop that's really neat I think.

Some awesome work on your site :)
And browsed some favourites, nice stuff over there too.
This vexel stuff seems to vary a lot.

What do you think of the gradient mesh tool?
Any idea on how people make this?
http://www.deviantart.com/view/27196068/ (nudity)
I think most people have trouble doing that in photoshop..

Personally I think vectors are better with a mouse, because of the anchor point tweeking... it's very annoying with a tablet...unless you're using the brush tool with custom brushes or something.

http://www.digmeout.net/artist_e.cfm?id=2
I like this style of it.

http://www.mdn.co.jp/
this magazine is really good if there's english version of it lol, a lot of features of vector artists and walkthroughs of their work and i think there's a special edition of it that is purely vector fantasy art.

Mm I think it's better to work with vector programs than with Photoshop ;) more options etc... for the first image it's done with the gradient mesh tool in Illustrator ^^ Look at the outlines : http://www.deviantart.com/view/26906033/ It's like a 3d work.
Honestly I never used this tool cause it's kinda tough to handle and I'm quite afraid of it ! lol
Here a tutorial for that : http://www.creativebush.com/gmeshtutorial/

Oh yeah I wasn't there this weekend so didn't continue it, but I have to now ^^
For the background I plan to add several bare dark trees, one tree at left behind her confining her with its branches. Then in the far background, maybe at left or right a ruin of archs..I dunno. Then at the left the light of the sun with rays through the trees.

For the reference used it's from a pack of the famous Lockstock on DA : http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29588522/

I think you have to enhance light sense on her figure.
AS example, light comes from up-right corner (see face see body) and it's quite direct.
I'm unable to see a 'direct-shadow' on the dress under her right arm.

looking forward to her.

Long time didn't work on my picture, I was busy in real life for the past two weeks, but here a little update, and the composition did quickly on photoshop ( boouuh that sucks without a tablet ), but that'd be how I'd see the pic. LoL, the light effect sucks I know.
Give me your c&c if you have some. ^^

Here's an update, I completly changed the shadows of the dress, they were not enough good for me we couldn't know where the legs were, and I'm starting now the bg...

I would like the root to go on the dress, like the branches of the tree want to keep her in its prison.

So don't hesitate to critique/comment !

Hello Zhaan :)
do you have any story or something else about this picture
Or your drawing just reflect your mood?

Zhaan
05-27-2006, 11:10 AM
Nope it has a story infact, I should have wrote it in the first post but didn't ^^; I always wanted to do some fantazy pic, it's my first one.

Here the short story I imaginated :

"Long time ago a fairy, called Drisana, couldn't reach/follow the sun cause her wings were broken - maybe by fights / many centuries of live - and she lived in a forest that kept her like in a prison; so she cried asking to the sun to save her, but it didn't reply, the sun only showed its light through the dead trees of the forest."

Drisana means Daughter of the sun, found it on a fantazy names website.

But another hand the story reflects maybe my mood when i wrote it...I dunno. The first sad pic I do.

Hello! its very interesting what have inspire you? music? Because mainly i always inspired by Music :)

Zhaan

True, it's the music "Following the Sun" from Enigma who inspired me mainly. ^^ So i often listen Enigma musics when doing this pic ^^

Hello! Did the wings cast light? if they cast girls spine must be it lights :)
Is it final concept for the Image , I mean background.

Zhaan
05-28-2006, 04:27 PM
@centurionit : thank you ! and yep I'm now glad hehe

@greatto : yup yup, the wings cast light, it'll reflect on the tree near wings and maybe the ground a little. It's not yet fnished, the background needs a lot of work yet, it's just the base done. I'd say the pic is at 50% done...:wise:
I still have to add a lot of details on ground, there'll be herbs, some ferns, spines maybe; and finish the ruin part too, then add the sun light on trees and the rays ^^ and we'll see if I'll have edits to do.

Hello! Maybe it will be better add more detail on main person and less like in blur to background :)
I do same allways when I getting too lazy, But you are too stronger and I belive you will do it in best variant! :)
Waiting for next post :)

this is looking great!

Her dress is coming along well, I especially like the ribbon running down the leg.
and that ruin/stone arch in the BG looks fantastic.

I used to be a huge vector fanatic too (as you can tell by my website URL)...I loved gradient meshes...until I bought a Wacom tablet. I still use illustrator for line work sometimes, but PS/painter is so much more natural and less labor-intensive.

there's a great gradient mesh tute at http://www.lifeinvector.com/index2.html
that's the site of brooke nunez, a very talented vector artist.

well keep it up, looking forward to updates!

Thank you very much ! Coming from an ancient vector fanatic that's very nice to hear ^^
(and hum that's not a ribbon in fact, you can't tell cause it's far, but it's a golden decoration on the gown)

Yeah i'd like myself to have a wacom tablet and work in PS/Painter but I have to wait a little though I have the money to buy one ;) lol

Thanks for the link. I knew it already though. ;)

I hope that you can get a wacom and painter soon. Your work in vectors really blows my socks off! This is becoming a beautiful painting. I would so love to see what you could do with painter and a wacom.

Zhaan
06-23-2006, 08:17 PM
Maybe it'd suck if I used a Wacom ?? You never know :p
(Just kidding, I already worked with my brother's wacom on PS, I really liked the feeling you have with it, like painting with a brush on a monitor lol )

Thanks anyway Patti for your kind words, this counts for me to have opinions of others, I can't wait to finish this pic ! :)

It's me !! After many months of procrastination, (meanwhile I did another pic cause I didn't feel to continue this one) I'm back to work on it. lol

So a little bit update, the bg is coming ! Yeahh ! I know there's a bug with the left tree, it needs some correction cause perspective is wrong by now but I'm going to push it so the wing won't have problems to go over it lol...

Any C/C are welcome please !! :scream:
