View Full Version : Grass once again - final comments needed!
LukasS 01-03-2003, 12:58 AM Hi here are few of test renders, don't worry about the grass it will be made with hypernurbs in final scene.
Tell me what you think about the scenery and light is it good? Which one is better and what would you change.

second render changed clouds, grass texture and turned off hypernurbs:

and the third one with changed light type and strength:

So what do you think? Comments really needed

BTW I'm looking for simple trees creator for cinema, i need only to have the leaves done, the tree itself i'll do with mesh. Do you know any plug to do this?

the third pic looks cool...im guessing this is made with hair department?...anyways umm the only real crit i have is you dont really need to have the grass a three sided object you could pull of the same effect with just flat polys

Yes it's Hair dept.
And yes it's 3-sided grass, i tried to do 2 sided (flat) but the results weren't enough for me. But i think if i have time and patience i'll try to return to this.

First one for me. I like pastelly, soft lighting. I would try putting a variation in the colour of the grass, just a large subtle color noise in the color channel should do it. As for a plugin for trees, I just found the x-frog plug-in for free on Digit magazine in the UK. It does amazing plants. Is this for an animation? Good work so far.

Well i like it myself and i'm divided and dunno which one i should work more on.

yeah, i like the first one the best as well. i think, in the two other pictures, the green of the grass is too bright in contrast to the light. you should pull back on the color a bit in these pictures...

my main crit is the seam between the grass and the sky, very unnatural making it look like two images composited together, one reason not to use a photo bg
rather than use the polys and HN, why not use the spine and solidspline?
please inform us of solid spline??

solid spline is a plugin available in two varieties, plain and pro available for Xl 7. Basically is a special kind of sweep alowing for tapers and such and should be available from the plugin cafe I believe.

But this solid spline dos round objects or it can do flat? Didn't noticed.
But good plug :) afterall.

BTW i didn't write what i wanted to get. It wasn't supposed to e very realistic image. It has to have climat of some sort. It will be pp in photoshop to be a promo pic to my site.
Later i will add some black/grey grass/leaves in photoshop (efect of camera being between the grass).
Some other minor effects and manipulations will be done to achieve what i want.
What do you think? I suppose that third render would be good for it. And i used very contrast colors with reason - it will good in final image.

I think the 3rd image does fit the bill if you're after a surrealistic look.
I love the blocky look of the grass and how it gets a little haze in the distance.
However, the sky should probably follow suit in terms of the style, shouldn't it? How about some matching blocky clouds and a faceted sun for example?
It just seems unfinished in that sense to me. That's my 2 cents anyway . . .
I hope this provides some insight for ya. ;)

your right but if you hypernurb a three sided on your going to get a round blade of grass as well, Didn't think that was your concern.
if you wanna avoid roundness you should only have a 2 sided blade cause then if you HN it it will have the same width but be smooth

Yes you're right and i did that, made the first (of three) parts of scene new and the grass is 2 sided with HN,
about the SS, i noticed that max size can be only 100 (i have v1) and it's rather small if i wanna do something else than grass, and final thing Hair Dept gives much more control over the final polygons and i like that, for example:
I can set the properties of the blade to start with 80% (of size) middle with 75% and tip with 15% wich gives me nice blade :).
Well for now i changed a bit of camera view (lowered the altitude) and currently working with sunlight. I wanna have effect of sun with rays (like rays coming through clouds). I have in mind some trees but it will be final step.
@medula
You got me wrong, this was only a test render and i didn't go to HN the grass for now (to get faster renders) and in final scene it will be all HN :).
But thx for advice.
BTW look at http://www.forum.3d.pl/ there was a contest lately and the rules where to do image with only cubes, i like some of the renders and i mention it after medulas' reply :).
