Yeah. I'd also much rather buy a 12" or 13.3" that I can hook up with any monitor out there than buying a 17" that isn't really mobile in the first place.

Hope that the new Macbooks (the non Pros) will be released pretty soon.

The 17" is very popular for video editors, music applications, and photographers who must pack "light" and need the screen real-estate and power in as light a package as possible. It's really not a bad upgrade at all from the top-tier macbook 15", as it bump the hard drive size, dvd burner, processor speed, and of course screen size for $300 more. You also get more ports. Just bumping the 15" to the 2.16Ghz processor will make them equal in price.

For anyone who hasn't looked or doesn't want to, here are the specs:
intel core duo 2.16Ghz
17" high brightness display 1680x1050
1GB DDR2 667Mhz
120GB 5400rpm hard drive (or 100GB 7200rpm drive)
8x dual layer dvd/cd burner
ati x1600 with 256MB and dual-link DVI
wifi and bluetooth
backlit keyboard
firewire 400 and firewire 800
three usb 2.0 ports
optical audio in/out
express card/34 slot
extra-large scrolling trackpad
gigabit ethernet

$2799 retail, $2599 with academic discount

Well, it is definately mobile. It is designed more as a mobile workstation and it does a good job at that. I personally have a 17" PowerBook. Another person in my office has a 17" Dell inspiron 9200 and another has a 17" Dell Inspiron XPS Gen2. What I always found nice is that we will all be sitting at the desk with our laptops, and I have the nicest looking, lightest and thinnest of them all... :D

It is always nice having the screen real-estate on the go to actually do video editing and stuff. I actually used it at church once where I would have it hooked to my external hard drive and a video camera and captured the entire service direct to hard drive in Final Cut Pro. Did all my editing and DVD authoring on it as well when I had time, wherever I was.

Of course, nothing beats a workstation like my Quad G5 when doing that stuff, but still. Very nice tool to have. I'll probably upgrade to the 17" MacBook Pro in about a year or so when more applications are native Intel.

Yeah...I feel the same when I go to a coffee shop with my HP 1100 tablet and I have Mac people come up to me and say I have a cool looking laptop...:D

I would be the happiest person if Apple releases a tablet pc with programmable buttons on the side. :)

I think at the end it's a matter of priorities..!

I've had the current 17" for three years, and have really liked it. Sometimes it is too big (airplanes in coach), but 90% of the time I'm not in a cramped space, and it's great.

I've been waiting for the 17, but I just read that Intel is bumping up the release of the 64bit duo chip, and it's not too far off, so I think I'll wait for that iteration.

I don't want to be stuck in 32bit land for the next three or four years if things start going 64. I also read that the 64bit chip generates less heat and uses less power, and of course runs faster ( :) )

Either way, having the speed of the new intel chips is really going to be a huge help when on the go. I saw that the RAM ceeling went up to 2gb on these also, so that'll help also.

Very nice. I think I'll hold out for a Desktop with Dual Woodcrest processors (Dual Quad Core) with a Nvidia card, but this looks terrific. I also hope they get an Nvidia option on all of their notebooks by years end.

As for the size... I have a 17" widescreen Toshiba, and I lug the beast all over. Sure it's not ideal in every location, but it is wonderful to have the ability to "really" work anywhere.

yeah i'm tempted to sell my g5 and spring for a macbook (probably 15" 2.0Ghz, as the 17" is a bit large for my needs...but then again ahhhh only $300 more...) but the lack of a huge amount of HD space is really not going to work for me, as I have about 500GB of files that I need and I can;t be bothered with an external drive. Also the graphics are better on my G5. I'd also regret it as soon as the intel desktops came out, as they should hopefully be a level cheaper than the current G5s.

When it comes to laptops, everyone pimps the power, but i would prefer they pimp the battery life. That is really the point of a portable computer.
