Hi there

My first challenge, so I hope I have put my work in the right place. Never know with all that guidelines to read first ;)

I have imagined a world where people of some reason has been forced to seek underground. Here they have rebuild there great civilizations.
My picture is all about a normal day in this old enligsh underground city, where a girl has received a letter which tells of great loss.
Just before departure she is one more time looking at the letter which has turn her life upside down.

Anyways..Here is where I am at the moment. I have worked a lot with coloring, but still have some more work to do, especially with the light I think.
So if anybody has some good advise please write.

thanks

This looks really nice. You have put your work in the right place, but it seems you've forgot a few pieces. What happened to the line art and the concept sketches and roughs? Not only will you need them officially "checked in" in order for your entry to be valid, but you surely can't expect us to believe you didn't do them at all? :) This piece looks far too finished at this point for you to not have those things to show.

But anyhow....
This is looking nice. Great scene and environment. I like the muted colors, and the way the woman, with a touch of color, stands out on the background so well. The designs in the background work well, too. i like the ornamental decorations on the giant archways. I'm not sure whether you even need the archway on the left.... The way the two intersect feels a bit awkward to me, like they were just cut-'n'-pasted into the scene. After all, looking at the archways on the right, it doesn't feel like the train could fit between two of those columns, neven mind columns turned at an angle.

Anyhow, it is nice looking. Good luck with it!

Hi Mike

Thanks for the comments. I can see what you mean with the pillars to the left, they seem to close the canvas a bit, but donīt know if there would be the same height if I removed them. Will try it out....And sure with the sketches. Have to put them in, was just so eager to hear on this one, so thought I could sneak it through before applying all the rest I have ha ha. Must come to night.

Thanks again

This image is striking (don't forget to upload your milestones ;) ) but I too notice that the angle of the bridges is a bit "off". The angle of the steam engine is fine, but the bridge that is parallel to it is not lined up on the same plane as the train and the two appear to cross through each other before the vanishing point instead of meeting at the vanishing point. I hope that makes sense.

Here's a link to explain it a little better than I: http://drawsketch.about.com/library/weekly/aa021603c.htm

Good luck. This definately has the potential to be great!

Yeah, I can now see what Walrus and Segvoia is talking about, u may need to either remove one of those completely or fix the placement to if u want to keep both elements in. I don't think u need the left one though, But I like this entry, ur milestones where are they, I would like to see the process, that is the purpose of this challenge, hehe! waiting to see those sketches and some more updates, welcome and good luck!

Hi Rasmus,

I like the concept you have because it is a darker type of story and serves as something interesting for a journey. The underground setting looks grim and very atmospheric. The steam coming from the train is a nice effect that sets the character apart from the background. Smart!

Here are my first concept sketches. I tried to sketch very quickly and tried to find out the atmosphere from the beginning. I especially was drawn by the many crossing lines and the height of the hall.
Thought of the lines as passage ways for all the future travellers.
I had the story about the lady in my head, so thought this place would fit nice with the smoke and artificial light.

I thought about this english looking environment and tried to capture this in the inhabitants. Liked the dresses a lot.

Had a lot of trouble finding out how the train at the station should look like, so after some drawings i tried to make it in 3d as a reference model.

Here is the line drawing I wanted to work from. Had experimented with the lamps and liked the organic shapes, almost like insects. Also worked with the pillars, and tried to make them add height to the picture. I thought about making the painting as seen in a wide shot lense.

A long with the line drawing I experimented with the organic forms which became the lamps in the ceiling. I had some inspiration from insects, with their legs hanging down. The color I used for this I used for my palette.

Hi again

Thanks a lot for all the good comments, I have thought a lot about the pillars, and must say Iīm pretty convinced now that I have to rework them in some way. Good to see it with some new eyes (if you can say that in english!!)

Thanks for the link Segvoia.

I have also posted some of the proces. Lesson learned, he he.

Nice to be in the challenge.

Hi

I think you should be careful with all the details in the background.. make sure that foreground will be more detailed then stuff in the distance... It now looks like that distant bridge is most focused part of the image, which I think isn't right (I understand that you have been working mostly on background though). I also think that you should lit the train a bit more because it now isn't too obvious that it's a train at all.
Nice work, I like he mood and characters a lot.

I have been working a bit with the composition and removed the pillars to the left. Helped, so thanks for the hints.
Also I have tried to put in some atmosphere, and put some more light on the train.

Have benn removing and adding a few things. Besides that I have cropped the picture, so the composition got a little bit better I think.

And here on the final count down, good luck to all of you!!!

I imagined the humans fleeing underground because of external threaths. There, they have refined and expanded their culture, making great citites carved into the solid rock. Huge lamps in the ceiling are glowing in the eternal darkness.

In this old english city, a lady have received a letter telling of big loss, which forces her to leave her beloved home. Before departure, she is looking one last time at the tragic words.
