I'm giving CG Challenge another go since I was not able to finish the last one do to a hectic work schedule.
The concept behind this work is "passing over" or taking that final great journey to whatever constitutes 'heaven' for a particular culture.
"The Division Bell" is the title of an album by the band Pink Floyd. The music has no particular correlation to this painting but ever since I heard that title I've had different images of a bell that some how acted as a gateway to another plane drifting through my head...

Roughing out the look, shape and angle of the bell.

Getting a sense for the angle, height and structure of the bell tower. Deciding which angle the light will come from.

I've decided on a shorter bell tower to depict size and bulk, I've also increased the length of the canvas to accomodate this. To highten the drama of the image I've voted for a dark sky full of massive clouds.

Nice, it has a lot of potential for some awsome lighting. I love backlight :)
Maybe you cab try a concept version with a wider scene so we can see some more of the road to travel.
Anyway, good luck.
Cheers, Jeroen

...Working up the sky. I've also stretched the canvas a fraction horizontally and have added lanterns as a concept. I'm still deciding if the environment beyond the bell is land or sea...

I like the drama the light coming through hints at.

Paying projects have gangstered my time so it looks like I won't be finishing this one for the challenge. I like the concept though and I'll continue developing it a little later and post it to the 2D gallery.
Good luck to all ;)
