hello everybody, it's a little bit late, but maybe I can handle, I started with this fast sketch...but...

...but then I felt it's too obvious to show normal ship leaving normal harbor, so I decided to create more spooky environment, I took old speedpaint, because I liked it's colors and treated it as a color base to create something different...

my idea is to create some kind of fantasy harbor between those great tree-like houses...one ship should be leaving this harbor starting the great journey...and this is my concept sketch of how those "houses" should look like...

some really nice speed paints here. Great colors and i like the design of the building. Can't wait to see this developed. Good stuff.

I like your environment changes. and the different mood you tried to express with the colours. what about a hazy, still green, but rather twilightish colouring? I'd love to see that

domclubb thx, but I think sometimes I loose this fresh look when I start digging in details :/
zeitwolf: yes! this is my idea, take a look at the update...
as you can see there's also a ship...first of few, more developed composition soon...:-)

I love your picture so far...the colours, composition and the atmosphere of the artwork. I also really like the sketches of the house that you submitted in earlier posts. Looking forward to seeing the progress of your artwork!

thx, but you guys didn't tell me which composition you like best: horizontal or vertical?? :)

domclubb

verticle is my favourite. The lower angle makes it seem more grand and dynamic and draws your eye up into the sky. The use of space is more economical too.

Beautiful concept. I prefer the vertical one. Keep it up!

Hello,

Very good atmosphere and color scheme. I think that the horizontal one is more in the concept of "a journey begin", but its true that in the vertical one the house is in a great angle.

Keep it up, i like the spontaneity of your work.

I prefer the composition of the horizontal picture however the horizonal picture focuses on the beautiful location, while the vertical one tells more of a story. The idea of the picture is "the journey begins..." and the vertical picture better captures this idea. I think you should choose the vertical one.

love the murky atmosphere -- creates a sense of thickness and claustrophobic intensity to the piece. nicely arranged and thought out. cool work...

Hi Przemek,

I had not seen your entry before and *wow* I am glad I found it! You have a wonderfully calm yet interesting atmosphere in a nice fairytale environment here.

I especially like the color choices.

Hi there,

these are just my thoughts on your composition - countercheck with your own views!

________________

I think the strength of the previous vertical composition was that the little crowd of people was in one of the focal points (according to the rule of thirds - as you struggle with composition right now it might be a good idea to reread on composition in Phil Straub's article (http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=3275&page=)).

At the moment the warm light from within the house is in that focal point and it is also the area with the strongest contrast so it draws the viewer's eye there.
From there I am likely to wander off outside of the painting along the diagonals which are formed by the tree-boughs. The ones to the left might not be too much of a problem as they are rather pale, but the ones pointing to the right let me slip right out of the composition. You should add elements which stop my visual path there.

Finally, if you add the little crowd entering the ship in the foreground again you have to somehow draw the viewer's eye there, as they won't be in the natural focal point. Maybe use strong contrast?

I don't know...it's your painting...:scream:

But I like the idea of combining the best of both worlds very much and think that in the end this will be one of my favourite entries...

thx Mu! I will read it carefully...for now I had an idea to hide the main subject a little bit, let the viewer first see those big trees and then he realizes that there's something happening down there and "wow" what the hell are they doing there? packing the ship? why? oh...the journey, wow. I just have an idea that viewer could explore the picture part by part, but dunno if it's good yet..;) all: thx for your advices, it's such a fun to hear it and accord to it ( sometimes;) )...

I think your vertical composition is beautiful. It emphasizes the journey aspect of the image. It has a vast feeling to it with so much cloud/sky background. Keep posting.

Great concept, I like the floating ship idea and the green bog lighting gives it a really different feel. The vertical approach is cool but the composition has problems. The image doesn't really have a focal point, my attention is torn between the ship being loaded at the bottom and the ship at the top. Some of that is due to them being about the same size I think. Maybe make the one at top little smaller? I also prefer the ship in the previous version where it is going away from the camera, as if that one is starting their journey. How about scooting the tree-building towards one side or the other, seems to semetrical right now. Personally, I prefer the tree-building from the last horz version, the uneveness of it with the root joining it at the bottom I find more interesting. Well, just some thoughts, take'm or leave'm, either way keep up the good art and best of luck to you!

ok, another look on horizontal one..I've put the second ship on the right side, now it's not breaking the composition in the middle, but accords the perspective line between those tree-buildings. I've also messed with colors, cooler to the horizon. Of course it needs few warmer areas, but I'll fix it later. Also the focal point on lower-left is more exploited...

Love this piece so far. Great themes. I really like the extreme perspective as well. I've seen several entries with similar themes and I love all of them. Can't wait to see the finished painting.

As you can see, I've changed many many things. For now it's the most important to finish it on time. I think there's no spare time to fix he composition or perspective :/ Hope it's not THAT bad and I'll force myself to concentrate. More updates soon.

azazel: yeah, I'm fighting with that, but I can't find right conception for the ship. As you can see the ship is a little bit rotated comparing to the building (look at the mast), so the whole of it's body must be bent. I need to put some perspective lines to see how all it works.

hard hard work. I've painted few more ships, people are scared, but I dunno how to make them panic, they're to small to show emotions, any ideas?

Muttonhead
05-26-2006, 06:56 PM
Yeah, how about a few tiny people falling over the edge... pushed off by the panicking mob, and a couple of tiny people reaching after their loved ones. Also maybe add the edge of an explosion right behind the crowd to give them something to panic about.... cool piece man. Good luck!

Ok, so here it is.

I've fixed few details and so on..

story it tells:

Something wrong is happening in Sequioa System, years of prosperity now are gone. Don't know why and don't know when, but suddenly one of the buildings was on fire. One by one other buildings started to burn in heavy flames. There was only one shelter left, but it's now on fire too. People in panic leave their beloved land and fly to the unknown direction. Maybe there's a new home waiting for them...somewhere.

Now I can tell you more technical background of this pic. As you may have noticed it was really hard to me to find proper composition. During the challenge I've learned pretty lot about it. Thanks to those who helped me a lot with this.
So the main focal point is on the lower left side (thirds section), as you can see I've closed that space on the right side with some rocks to make one be curious what's there. Also I tried not to detail those rocks and background much to concentrate one's eye on the main subject on the left (the tree - which I tried to texture pretty good). The ship was the worst task for me. I'm glad I've left that old ship designs idea.

I'd like to thank all those who watched my thread and other great artists which are present in this challenge.

Hope to start in the next challenges too:) C'ya.
