I think it really depends how you linked it. You probably just paranted it and that gave you strange results. Try a point constraint (for translation) and then an orient constraint (for rotations) This way the object isn't parented and you most likely wont get you problems.

thanks for your reply
i have already the point constraint. it works fine. i will try the orient constraint. i think this will work too.
i want to animate a skateboard along a path. that's why i need this. also i want to rotate the wheels.
i did this with some mel. but i'm sure you guys do this easier.
any idea??

Set driven keys for the wheels works. But only for a way to make them uneditable. Like you can make the skateboard the driver and a wheel a driven object. Then key the rotation of the wheel to the forward movement of the skate board. Go into the graph editor after that and modify the cycle attribute to pre and post infinity. But it is a static thing. The wheels wont spin unless the board is moving.

thanks for the quick answer!!
okay ... this is a cool setup for this.
but what if i attach the skateboard to a path? how will the board (and only the board, not the wheels) spin when the skateboard turns left or righ??? it has to do this automatically. this is the major problem :(((
