View Full Version : Animation: MASERATI 3200 GT movie
MIRMAX 01-02-2003, 05:09 PM I bought a 3D model of a maserati 3200 GT at www.3d02.com.
I have done some modifications to the body, lowered the car and modelled new wheels and brakediscs.
In this project I have focused on camera movement, lighting surfacing and the final editing with sound and typography. I have used afterFX and Lightwave.
*edit*
Lewis has made the model.
I have tried to approach the more traditional genre of car commercials. I wanted to emphasize the curved shapes of the body. The intro was an attempt to do so. Italian car aesthetique and driving experience should be amplified with Pavarottis version Rigoletto and the oversized wheels/brackediscs, color and low driving style. The clean setting is meant to even stronger put tha car and it's smooth shapes in fokus. I also think these surroundings in contrast to the car itself makes a more elegant
look to the entire scene.
Using a wide format also gave me the necesseray "cinema/production look", getting away from the more crappy 4:3aspect. This format made it easier for me to find good angles for camera, and achieve the better shots.
I hope the fade from logo to the final setting leaves the viewer behind surprised and hopefully a little bit impressed.
This corresponds with the fact that this car is awesome, and is beyond your wildest deams when it comes to driving experience.
*edit*
(I need to get me a real 3200GT)
comments?:)
The movie comes in high and low quality mpeg at this site enjoy:)

Hi MIRMAX !
You did great job with animation (sound is cool but little too fast for my taste ;)). Whole idea is very cool and tasty.
I see you changed my rims and lowered car more to ground but that's not right :). That car now can't steer front wheels. Fron't rims/tyres are DAMN too low. I made car with blueprints so he is of gorund like it should be :). Surfacing looks unchanged ?
Also your rims looks great but they are techicaly "incorect" :). Maserati RIMS have 5 screw holes and your have only 4 :). BTW i don't see maserati logo on rims either ? I modeled two types of maserati rims (other can be visible on my homepage) and both official rims have maserati logo on them. Is this imagined rim or what?
No matter to these comments animation is still looking great :).
P.S.
I only have some problems/issues with info/copyrights on that www.mir-visuals.com where it says - QUOTE : "Vi produserer hoykvalitetes bilder av digitale modeller." If i understand this well this means that you produce hi-quality models/images but i wonder why did you put that info on my maserati model wich is clearly NOT modeled by you or your company ?
Don't be ofended but i would like that you clarify me this part on Mir-Visuals !
Since you purcased model form 3d02 (i made few car models for wesley from 3d02 but EVERY car and image have my credits 'coz that was part of deal) you could see that ALL my models have clearly stated who modeled and rendered images so you can't say that you didn't know/see who is modeler ?.

wow
bet he will say since he changed a couple pixels and moved a couple polys he can now say he modeled it and void any kinda deal

WOW
thanks for all the good feedback people?:) :) :)
Lewis.
I really have not tried to take any credits for your model. The text next to the maserati image on our page do not claim that we have made the model.
BUT JUST TO MAKE ONE THING STRAIGHT!:]
*****
"Vi produserer hoykvalitetes bilder av digitale modeller"... means;
"We produce high quality images of digital models. nothing more or nothing less :) "
*****
We will of course update our page and mention your name regarding the GTmodel.
Anyway, the 3200GT car is awesome, and it is a great model
you have made Lewis. Thanks for the technic feedaback. You are right about the car beeing impossible to drive with this wheel dimensions. And I didn't know about the number of screw holes either. The wheels where partly intended on a robot I'm working on.
I lowered the car, lowered and modified the side and front skirts, and put on these wheels to give the car a more agressive and racing type of look. :)
Thanks, I hope this helped clarify thing Lewis.

Yes MirMAX that's clarify some things and i'am glad to see you are resonable and fair guy :). So now will you add one more hole to rims :). BTW can you say something about renderitme ? Wich subpatch level did you used on rendering ? MY animation uses level 3 but i was doing it on old crapy machine with 1GHz Celeron CPU so rendering 2100 frames was took me about 20 days with radiosity ;). Ehh i wish i had my new rendering machine back then (P4 2.53Ghz is exactly 3 times faster in overall performance and sometimes it's even 4 times faster than old celeron 1GHz clocked to 1.3GHz)
P.S. I understud that you didn't say that you modeled maserati3200GT but you either didn't say that you didn't modeled it ;). Also it's only model in gallery what i saw and wich says that you "produce hi-quality" models :). Yes its tricky but it's making people THINK that you made that model also 'coz text it's next to it.
For me credits are secret thing and i don't like to use any premodeled models just because it's neded to put all credits on image :). But that's just me.
BTW your company have soem great portfolio images.

Ok I guess my awe on the model goes to Lewis and kudos for the great animation goes to MIRMAX!
MIRMAX

I am glad you liked our portfolio:)
I used subpatchlevel 3. I used 4 dual machines to render.
rendering time varied a lot between the different shots.
from 10min pr frame to 40min.
radiosity setting "4:12 montecarlo" with low antialiasing.
I have actually made the body and chrome surfaces myself:D

Heres an example how I have used the car to illustrate how an idea is transformed from sketchboard to the finished product

Both model and animation is fantastic. Credits to both of you.
I think MIRMAX has done a good job NOT taking credit for the modelling.
However: Lewis is unreasonable when he tries to tell us norwegians what the mir-visuals site claims in norwegian language.
My suggestion is: Lewis stops whining and MIRMAX adds a link to www.3d02.com on the mir-visuals site.
Everyone:
What is the standard in giving credits when you buy models for professional use? Do you name the modeller or the company?

You aren't RIGHT. If he added credits to 3d02 or me than it would be OK but he DIDN'T add credits to modeler or 3dshop on page where is link for animation. But he celarly stated maserati logo credits on page why not then credits for model also ?
Also as you can see in first replyes people thinked that he or his company modeled that car wich is not case.
Please THINK before you post next time. As you can see MIRMAX now added credits to his page and everything is solved.
BTW i had one copyrights problem recently (still dealing with them) with one very RUDE company who copyed images of my models to their page (they left my name on images but removed every link to my WEB page / contact) and they claimed that they made industrial models (they used about 10 images of my cars) with many artists who work for them. Acctualy they are "luring" clients with work wich isn't their. So i'am a bit "jumpy" when it comes to copyrights ;). MIRMAX sorry if offended you or soemthing and i'am glad that we solved this easy.
Suggestion to Reddikk von Fru : Don't try to "solve" problems wich aren't of your interest ;).

Don't worry MIRMAX :). I'am done. I "moved" my disscusion with Reddikk to e-mail :).
OK now some real comments :).
Like i said earlyer Animation is very cool and i like it. Idea of driving on logo is great IMHO.
Music is fitting in "italian moode" and everything is great composed until 46th second :). For me rotation of camera is too fast in that point. Since you don't rotate camera full 360 in that part i don't see point why "rush" for rotate when everything is slow and smooth till then :).
This is ofcourse just IMHO and it's great even now so if you don't want to change anything it's still fine by me :).
P.S. Animation is a bit too much resource hungry maybe ? I trayed to play on my Pentuim III 500MHz with 512MB RAM at work and low version (12MB) is all jerky almoust unplayable :). Maybe you could lower bitrate for low quality version ? It plays OK on stronger machines like 1Ghz and more (Other machine on my work is 1.4GHZ P4 and its' smooht there). My maserati animation is low version on WEB (10 MB DivX 1m20sec) and it's playable on Celeron 600MHz but hi-quality version (not included on web) is also resource hungry and only 900+ MHz machine can play it smoothly :).
cheers
MIRMAX
01-03-2003, 08:50 PM
Thanks for comments.
I see what you mean and I agree, but i felt the music kinda gave the little boost at this point. So this rather quick rotation fitted quite well I thought. I also noticed I somewhere along the way have lost the dot over the i in maserati logo on the rear shot.
Im sorry for the large file size. My mpeg encoder gives me a hard time trying to push the bitrate lower. I tried to make it smaller, but
the output was jerky and partly corrupted:annoyed:

That is neat. The car riding on the logo was predictable (but good nontheless), and I think that it would have helped to introduce the car a bit faster.
There are a couple of points where you could cut the animation to make it fit more inside the boundaries of a normal car ad.
The tires/rims/break disks look fine to me, but I have never seen the car before.
Just some small points. Great job overall.
MIRMAX
01-05-2003, 04:16 PM
thanks for comments.
I agree that it was kinda predictable with the car driving on logo.
Any suggestions how the intro could have been solved a little different. Perhaps timing is a little wrong. As mentioned It maybe takes to long time before the car is revealed.
Personnally Im not quite satisfyed with the final part of the zoomout from logo. I think the rear view in the end of the zoom somehow doesnt look good in the format. Pehaps the zoom should be quicker so I was allowed to see more of the car before the crossfade to next shot??

This type of car materials uses gradient on reflecting channel with incidence angle to achive "natural" fresnel effect what real car paint have. You can freely ask if you have more questions/problems ;). MIRMAX would help you also i hope :).
You can check my post on car when model was finished. It's old one but there is explained a lot of maoking of that car, cheers. MIRMAX sorry for bringing this up but here is link for my maserati post loong time ago while i was modeling and rendering animation for days so that guys can check what questions are already answered ;).

Hei, thanks!
Perhaps the most important thing when it comes to surface reflictive objects is of course what is being reflected. This could be an image map surrounding the scene or simply a modelled surrounding. Image map is the quickest and best way to achive a decent sorrounding fro your reflective object. It's important that these images is of high resolution as they tend to get blurred when stretched around your scene. Best way to get good reflectionamps is to get yourself a fisheye 8mm lens to your camera. take the picture straight up in the air and you get the entire surrounding.
here is an example using the maserati:
