View Full Version : STILL: Passat wheel / tire
Brent Turbo 01-02-2003, 03:14 PM Here's an old one I resurrected because the subject of tire modelling came up in the Cinema forum. Basic setup, just a pair of lights, and about an 8 minute render time. Took about an hour to model the tire, and the wheel was extremely difficult with Cinema's modelling "tools" -- it took several hours.
Thanks!
Brent

looks pretty nice. No real crit. Now, if you don't mind could you post some info on the materials you used? i'm current modeling a tire and rim in Max but just cant get the right rubber look.

Looks great, is there a tut on this tire?

Hey, thanks for the comments!
GimpGutter: The rubber material is actually really simple...
color: dark, slightly warm grey
reflection: about 10%, with Fresnel falloff (AKA incidence angle)
bump 1: very fine noise texture, scaled very small, as to blur the reflection on the rubber.
bump 2: an image map, made in illustator, of the circular line pattern on the side of the tire.
And that's it!
Fourd: I don't have any formal tutorial for this, but I do have a couple of images online that show a bit of the process. I made one piece of strip of tread for the tire, and then used an array tool to copy the tread piece a hundred or so times in a circular motion. Then I had a bunch of tread floating in air. After that, I just made a curve for the tire shape, and lathed that around, and the tread pokes straight through it. Maybe some images will clear it up?

How's that?

That's not bump, the thread is pure geometry, modelled ;)
(he said that a couple posts ago)

Mr. Turbo that is a pretty cool wheel.
Maybe show some more, smaller steps on creating this in Cinema.
I don't know how to get a full wheel out of using the array tool.
I know the technic with the small strips made as a cylinder mapping but this was for the bump only.
If you like to make a little tutorial i will host it for others.

I just looked in the tire thread in the c4d forum.
Made some first tests with the bend deformer and
another test with the wrap deformer.
Wrap looks pretty nice so far.
But i do actually not understand the descripten of you way
to get the result. Array is quite clear to me.
But what with that lathe thing ant the spline.
Using C4d 7.303 right now.
a step by step may be some great help.

Hey everybody, thanks for the response...
ThirdEye: Nah, the bump isn't shown in the editor, that's just polygons.
All: I'll post something like a tutorial later today that gives a little more insight into making this tire.
Thanks again for checking it out!

Thanks alot, man. It's looking pretty nice now, guess i just needed that falloff mat to get it just right.
