View Full Version : Characters: showreel
Laa-Yosh 01-02-2003, 01:34 PM Hello everyone,
I've put together a reel from some characters I've did in the past year:
Showreel (www.3dluvr.com/ly/reel2002.avi)
Mirror (http://www.third-era.com/~polymath/ly/reel2002.zip)
Mirror (http://www.driveblind.com/files/reel2002.zip)
It's ~25 megs and requires the DivX 5.02 codec. All comments and critiques are welcome - bring them on ;)

That's strange, it is on 3dluvr and shouldn't be that slow for you. I've just had a pal in the UK to check it and he said that he's got normal download speeds... Anyway, I'll try to see if I can find a mirror. Oh, and thanks ;)

... unfortunately it crawls here also with about 4 kb. But I'm pretty sure that it will be worth waiting for it. I have seen already much of your work.

Yeah 3Dluvr sure is having bandwith probs these days, I think he's finally reached his cap... The animation I plugged today by Enrique Gato is suffering the same thing...
downing now tho, I'm sure it's worth it :)

Thanks for the kind words, guys!
I've uploaded a smaller file to 3dluvr, it's 400*300 pixels and 16 megs:
Small version (www.3dluvr.com/ly/reel2002_small.avi)
About the job, well, I don't really know it yet. Our current assignment ends in a month and I don't really know what I'm going to do after it, so it is sort of a preparation :)

I'm sorry guys, it seems that I've picked the wrong day for this. Angelfire has already pulled the site because of bandwith use, and 3Dluvr seems to be at its slowest ever... I'm trying a couple of other ideas, but if anyone has a suggestion, please email me.
For the mean time, I've uploaded a few shots from the reel to here (www.3dluvr.com/ly/reel/).

Well, I've managed to find a mirror, so let's just see how fast it is.
Mirror (www.pixel.hu/xms/reel2002_small.avi)
Let me know if it's slow as well...

I love the reel, very nice models...excellent quality.
The only suggestion I have, which may sound trivial, is that you change the music. Almost everyone and their neighbor uses techno'ish music on their reel...and viewers are tired of it(even though several of them just turn the music off and hit FF when viewing).
Try something upbeat like that...but without the techno'ish style. Try some Deep House or something(check MP3.com).

J

Thanks again for the comments!
Advanced, I don't really know about the music - some of the cuts are timed to it, and I definitely don't want to redo the whole reel. It's not really techno IMHO, and I personally like it a lot; but I'll reconsider it anyway.
IDownUpI, you have a sharp eye - there is indeed a small error in that animation. We've noticed it too late to change it, but I think that it's not that obvious ;)
Michael Andersen was kind enough to provide me with another mirror, so you should be able to get the larger version zipped here (http://www.driveblind.com/files/reel2002.zip). Thanks again Michael!

(pardon my poor english)
Slow? Streaming here....
Your models are (as you problably know) great :p
But I think the showreel would have been better of with some calmer/slower/easier music.
The music makes me want other pictures than what I get.
-I start waiting for "the action", but never get it.
I would look for the music that states "take your time to see this, its really amazing", not "yeah baby, lets do tons of drugs together"....or something like that.
With your "gliding" pictures i would....ah, you probably know what I mean by now. :p

Very nice models!
But the music says something like "Push the tempo! Where is the tempo?" Like the others i think it does not fit to the smooth images.

Pretty nifty, although I think it would be better to have the models in action poses as opposed to just static default poses.

Thanks a lot for the comments, guys, I'm so happy that you like it! :)
The music might not be the best choice indeed, I'll find something else for the next reel.
Action poses would be cool, however the models weren't rigged and I really haven't had time to do that. It took me several extra nights just to get the rendering/comping/editing done.
For modeling I use max4 with meshtools and the box method; Wiro has a nice tutorial about it on his home page (www.secondreality.ch).
I've been able to set up another mirror here (http://www.third-era.com/~polymath/ly/reel2002.zip).
Thanks for Polymath for his help!

meshtools and box method, is that what sub-division modeling means in the wiro tutorials ?? thax
Laa-Yosh
01-07-2003, 08:17 PM
Yes - the naming conventions haven't really been worked out :)
Some people call it box modeling because it's usually starting from a box. Some call it subdiv modeling because you're modeling with subdivision in mind. Others call it edgeloop modeling and I'm sure there are several other names for it... but it's usually the same thing.

Really nice models, and the music type isnt that bad, not that I'm much for technoish music but its a suiting contrast to the slow cam movements.
I would have liked to see more animation of those great models - even slight moves would have improved greatly, imagine a static model suddenly rapping a few words of the lyrics, the baby model striking a matching pose or maybe the models just nodding their heads to the beat. But maybe that would have distracted from the focus on the modeling?
Anyway, great work, I hope it does the trick for you!

Hi Tamas (Laa-Yosh?)
I think this is my second post at cgtalk. :) I told you already and would like to tell you again that I love your reel. Also, thanks for the great info on your subdiv site. It has been one of my top ten links for the past two years. Keep on modeling!!!
;)

Hello Anna, nice to see you on CGTalk! I'm glad that the reference page has helped you, though I feel a bit bad about neglecting it. I'm working with some guys here to help me get a better system working for updates, we'll see how much it takes to see some results.
Anyway, thanks for the praise again :)
(oh, and LY is a nickname I've been carrying since secondary school)
Moroten, there are two reasons why the grey shaded characters aren't animated: first of all I'm not an animator, and I don't feel like I'd have the talent for it. Thus the reel would have indeed lost its focus, that should be the modeling; and it might even create a different impression because of the lame animation ;)
Second, we've just started texturing and rigging these characters this week, for the intro that they belong to... But if I can, I'll try to post some images or clips from that movie once it's done.
And I'm happy that you've liked the music ;)

my fav part of the avi is Soliders, looks real.
guy with galsses, eye looks bit far back.
keep up the work! wish u a job you enjoy!
I haven't seen the reel yet but I looked at the JPEG's
baby1.jpg and baby2.jpg = WOW!!!
I love the style of the model and texture, excellent work. The baby has a slight 'retro' look to him/her [a hint of Gerry Anderson prehaps].
The eyes and the skin are excellent. The eyes do have a tiny hint of hidden menace - like your work a lot.:bounce:

COngrats, man! Nice clean meshes, great lighting and texturing alike! I don't think the music sounds techno at all. Fatboy slim ain't techno for sure anyways.
Granted, music gives much more dynamism to reels at least for the artist who is creating it, but now that the subject has been brough up, would it suppose a risk if your were to then dub the whole reel? I remember reading that some companies just mute the sound anyway, and if your music is going to induce people to feel or think things that you don't want to, wouldn't it be best to dub it?
This isn't in your cases, Tamas, I'm just speaking in general now.

Reaaally impressive modeling! Did you write some tutorials?

That's a damn good showreel. Nice work.
I got a question. How do you render out animation that fades into a wireframe like you did with your baby? That looks so cool.

Wow... so many replies, so many kind comments - thanks everyone!
Actually someone should make a more negative post before I get overly self-confident :)
Juntao: yes, Saving Private Ryan and the Band of Brothers have been a source of inspiration for that FMV. We've actually recorded the series from HBO and watched it a few times during the 2 months of production :)
By the way it is one of the cinematics from Sudden Strike 2, a WWII strategy game. You can download the whole animation from www.puppetworks.hu.
Strick9: it wasn't just a rendering effect. I've created a wireframe shaded playblast/preview and saved it as an uncompressed avi; then I've put together the original sequence and the wireframe in a compositing app. Then I only had to animate the opacity of the second layer to create the fade.
ghZaaaRK, most movie trailers have similar size/length ratios. There are many cuts and changes in this animation which makes it hard to compress, and I wanted to avoid artifacting. I'm open to any codec suggestions though :)
Bliz: thanks for the kind words.
The baby sequence was a collaborative effort (just as Sudden2). I've modeled and UV mapped the baby, then our art director textured and animated it. Then I've created the skin shader, did the lighting, and rendered out different passes, which were then put together by a compositing artist.
This reel is actually meant to show off my modeling skills, but I thought that these two short clips using my models would make it more convincing :)

Hi Tamás!
I started modelling with the aid of your 'low-poly man' article in PC GURU. I was inspired by Paul Steeds Bad Girl contest. I modelled Unipuma a Masamune Shirow character out of 1500 poly. And now I'm looking for work.
I just want to thank You and all the other generous CG artists who are reseaching and sharing their knowledge with the community.
A friend of mine will download your reel, 'couse my connection is slooow.
I'm sure we will meet some day. Best Wishes!
