View Full Version : what is the best option while rendering out movie
editormanish 04-21-2006, 08:31 PM hi,
this is my first post.
anybody plz tell me what option shud i chose while rendering out my showreel which i compiled on after effects.
actually i used DivX codec and send my reel to a production house. probably they dont have required codecs installed there. it didnt play on there computer. so what is the best option avalable so that the file size is limited , quality is good and it can run on almost every type of system (ie no requirement of codecs).
waiting for reply.

I wonder what kind of production company doesn't have DIVX codecs but well, anyway.
If you want it to work everywhere... MPEG-1 or uncompressed avi ? ^^
Over the net, Video for flash and quicktime work well.

DivX is a bad idea, because of the spyware roumors about it. Sending a reel in uncompressed AVI would be stupid. Beside that the size is enormous the high bitrate may cause errors and breaks during playback. Stick with mpeg1 or Quicktime using the Sorenson 3 codec.

Couldn't agree more. Quicktime with Sorenson 3 codec has extremely high distribution rate (virtually all post houses use quicktime) and Sorenson 3 is decent quality, decent size codec. If you are SENDING them the file, i.e. on a disc, you needn't worry as much about file size since there is no download time - in this case I would recommend h.264 codec, which delivers almost identical quality to Sorenson for roughly half the file size.
As a side note, I'd like to inject my opinion here. Divx is NOT a professional codec. It's primary use to date has been for long-form distributions over limited bandwidth connections (like the internet) - for example, pirated movies and the like. Many, many post houses will not have the Divx codec because, well, why in the hell would they? Divx is cool and getting better all the time, but it is still very much a consumer-oriented codec, not a professional one.
