"A PDF accidentally showed up on Seagate's website earlier today with the latest details on perpendicular desktop hard drives

Seagate insiders contacted us early this morning with a few snippets of information (PDF) (http://www.seagate.com/pdf/marketing/po_barracuda_7200_10.pdf?www.dailytech.com) concerning the upcoming Barracuda 7200.10 series hard drives. Like other Barracuda drives, the 7200.10 series are based on 7,200RPM spindles. "

I look forward to seeing RAID devices based on these drives.

Just imagine how long the first formating will take or scanning the whole disk (when full) against viruses :D To be honest I'd more than happy having that "issues" :P

Sweet stuff. I might have to get me one of those drives here down the road. Not like the 2 500GB drives I have isn't already enough mind you... but still... :D

Sounds great. Seagate has been my favorite HD company for many years. My only peeve with it was already mentioned, it will take forever to format or defrag a drive that big!

Lets see the largest consumer drives are 500Gb and those cost around $300, so a 750GB will probably be around $450 to $500

Not that good price to GB ratio and really your better off spaning data over multiple drives then one big one.

Anyone else just prefer having smaller seperate drives? At the very least incase the drive goes down (not putting all the eggs into one basket as they say :D ).
I suppose you could have a raid backup instead of a raid stripe? But still...

I also organise stuff based on my multiple drives.

for my new HTPC i bought two 250Gb hard drives and striped them as one 500Gb unit, I'd love to do that with two 750Gb disks.. :D

That is true for Data you create, but me, I'd like to make a nice video server for the house, and store all my DVDs on the drive, so the only thing I'd loose is my time if the drive failed, as I'd still have all the original DVDs

You figure on avrage 7G for a Movie that's 100 Movies Per Drive, 2 Drives in a home server, That should cover my full library :)

DVDs are a big bitch, it took me over 300 gb I think to back up all my F.R.I.E.N.D.S seasons.

Sure, bigger is great, but lets get them quicker. 7200 should not be a standard, why do they try to keep us in the dark so long? Please dont tell me.
I do prefer a few 10000 rpm units and a few larger slugs due to pricing bla

my 2 bits

Cheers

I'd prefer multiple small drives too.
But you gotta consider that each drive costs you about 25 Watt power.
I'd buy 3X250 GB harddrives if I knew I can devote 75 Watt just for storage.
But then again, I don't need that much GB right now.

My first hard disk was 10MB yes I did say 10MB not 10GB and at the time I thought I'd never fill it.
