View Full Version : Animation short: "Bicho"
Enrique Gato 01-02-2003, 09:05 AM Hi there! :D
I've just completed an animation short I've been making for a very long time. The file size is a little big, so I hope you are patient to download it all. You can download two versions:
- High quality (36 Mb): http://www.3dluvr.com/gato/videos/Bicho_400x300_mpeg4.avi
- Low quality (22 Mb): http://www.3dluvr.com/gato/videos/Bicho_320x240_mpeg4.avi
I'll be waiting for your comments

To download just click on the links. Don't try to rightclick and save, it doesn't work. The server doesn't support getright or gozilla, so don't use them if you want to get the animations.

I absolutely love animations that can speak without words, this was very well done and had a nice twist there at the end very very nice indeed. Although I would've recommended more 'snappy' timing, I grew to like the aliens movements this way.
I plugged it both here and http://www.3dfestival.com
You have received the CGtalk choice award. Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Congrats again, well done, keep it up!

Thank you very much for all your comments, I'm really glad you like the short.
I spent about a year making it in my spare time. The software I used is 3d Studio Max 4, Combustion and Adobe Premiere.
If you enter in http://www.3dluvr.com/gato and click on the animations section you'll find some extra info about the short that you'd probably like to know.
Thanks again

Holaaaaaaa....
I had already downloaded your short, like a month ago or so.
I have to say that you've done a wonderful job, and the only thing I can crit here, is that the whole thing seems to be a bit slow to me in a couple of moments, like if the action scenes need to be faster or more dramatic. I'm not sure why I'm saying this, though.
I cant wait to see what's next!

That was excellent! I really loved it!

I saw this a while ago. I thought the pacing was too slow and the music was annoying. The animation is pretty good.
I can't play the file, even though I installed Quicktime6!

Hmmm... I'm having difficulty playing it. What's the codec?
I hope it's not the older version of DivX (aka 3.11) because the only way us Mac OS9 users are able to view DivX 5 stuff is to trash 3.11:annoyed:

Ok Mac people - the reason ur having probs playing it is cause the audio is in WindowsMediaAudio...only the visuals are Mpeg4.
Which means u Mac people have to download MediaPlayer for Mac from good ol' Microsoft.

I too am unable to see it on my Mac os X.2
By the way everyone is talking about it, I'd really like to see it.
what can be done?

I'm a Windows XP guy, still can't play it tho ;)

First of all thanks Obraxis. I got it to download with blazing speed with my DSL service. Before that the internal error was all I got. In case some of you still get it make sure to change the name of the mirror, otherwise it will still conk out.
As for the short: Very well animated. Fantastic in fact. The music was good, not great, just good, not annoying. But I think it's good to get a wide variety of honest opinions from many people, don't you Enrique Gato? This way you can still make minor adgustments all for the better.
Spoilers below ....beware.
The story was very good. Interesting. Pretty fun. I like the fact that the bad guy ends up in the space Zoo/museum. Expressions were very well done to. I think all in all it was a very good piece of work.I had fun watching it. Thanks for the short Enrique Gato. :applause:

Hello again
First of all thanks to everybody for your comments (for all of them, including the people who didn't like some aspects of the short, there're always things to learn from negative critics)
I see there are some people who can't download the whole short due to slow connection. If you want to try at least to download a piece of the whole movie, check the next URLs:
high quality(12 Mb): http://www.3dluvr.com/gato/videos/Bicho_400x300_mpeg4_SHORT.avi
low quality(7,5 Mb): http://www.3dluvr.com/gato/videos/Bicho_320x240_mpeg4_SHORT.avi
All the avis are compressed with Microsoft MPEG4 codec. You can get it downloading an updated version of Windows media player:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/download/default.asp
For all the people who have other problems to download the short I just can say them to wait some hours so that the server is not collapsed.
Thanks for your patience
Omita

The character reminds me of Mark Osborne's claymation characters from "More".

Windows Media Player doesn't play any avi files on a mac. It seems to be part of Microsoft's condemnable strategy to introduce new standards, force them upon windows users and not support them on other systems.
The Mp42 codec is supposed to be an mpeg codec, but microsoft managed it to be incompatible with this very standard. :thumbsdow I can only beg anyone offering content on the internet to use standards that anyone is equally able to use, as http://www.3ivx.com/
Yet for anyone with a mac using X there is hope :p You can download mplayer, it plays most avi's that the qt player doesn't. (get MPlayerOSX1.01.sit)

Another alternative for Mac users is a program called VideoLAN Client, which I've found to play both the audio and video of avi's very well. Though I can't say whether it works with this specific file yet (still need to get the download working), if you're having trouble getting the file playing, and want to try it out you can download it here (http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.4.6/macosx/vlc-0.4.6.dmg). Hope it works ok, and looking forward to seeing the animation!

Ah! Just found Obraxis' mirror, and downloaded from there. Happy to say that both the video and audio work fine in VLC on 10.2 (again, you can download it for Mac here (http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.4.6/macosx/vlc-0.4.6.dmg)), so if you haven't gotten it working yet, that might be your answer.
Oh, and, of course, great animation! Love the expressions of the character, and nice job on the lighting :applause:

Great short film! I enjoyed it a lot. It reminded me a lot to Daniel's Martinez style. Very nice. What I enjoyed the most is when the alien pushes the button of his space ship to take land: I love the expresion on his face and his pose. It's very subtile and I think it's because of this I like it.
I don't like the fact that there're very few elements textured in the short... But I know that making all this work one or two persons is already a hard task. You're excused. :p
I wish I could animate like you do...
Un saludo y enhorabuena!

Hola Gato!
You did an amazing work with Bicho. I saw this character a long time ago in Lara's school, and I think now it's better than a year ago. I think the animation is one of the best I've ever seen in a particular work. I must give you the highest rating.
Congratulations
