wanted to rethink the whole thing, and thought that i should do more thumbs. i also want to include as many desgin elements as i can; environment, character, and industrial. still thinking about the creature part. maybe a tricked out cat leading the way or something. here are the thumbs and a new composition and concept that i think better describes the theme.

draw!

I like the new composition. I liked the last one too, though this one fits the Journey Begins theme better. Nice concept sketches, too... Now, hurry up with the rest, you still have miles to go on your Journey to finish this! :)
Good luck!

I really don't know.. I like the way the other elements had 'tower'ed the characters in the first composition.
But I think I can see the point you are going for with the latest, and it is sort of sad that with the perspective in hand such an effect can't really be used.

None the less you really seem to know what you want...
Your lines are very good and expressive.
Would really like to see this entry evolve.

Good luck!

Ps;
I think a little cat leading in front would be a uique adition.. and look really cool!
Or a dog...

the skyline needed some work so i scanned in a couple of drawings and repositioned things. some i like a little more than others but each has at least a couple things that i really like. btw, all bldgs reference in one way or another baltimore architecture.

Hey Kurt! Excellent line drawings...really like where you are headed, but, hope you get there in time! Work, work, work...any one of those concepts is perfect (my fav is the upper left which allows your characters to be easily read, but that would also depend upon your colors...) looking forward to seeing the next steps! Good luck!

heres the final composition. i decided on a composition where the hat of the character didnt break the skyline. the architecture is an important element that needed its own space. i also felt the page needed to be filled with something more than clouds, smoke, fire or something else.

the woman is just off center, her past to the left, present and then future on the right, its a play on the way we read that hopefully conveys.

time to start painting.

continuing coloring. constantly flipping the image for a fresh perspective. amazing how different it looks and how many adjustments and changes pop out and beg for attention.

after reading/watching countless tutorials on digital painting i took what i thought were the most interesting/logical/practical techniques and combined and then attempted to apply them here...that became a real headache and so i flattened the whole thing and am now down to something like 4 layers, one line, one value layer with blending mode set to multiply, one for the fog effect and one at normal blending mode over the line art. this is how i have been painting and so far it has been good to me. i am always looking for a more efficient way to do things, but i guess i'll just come across that in time.

the faces need work and the head especially needs to be tilted up a little. so far its ugly but in that good way that paintings always are.

sorry for being late on this, but i'm not crazy about the way the tall buiding points toward (or sprouts away from) the woman's head. hope this makes sense. it just seams a bit distracting.

more detailing. i am continuing to paint over the lineart, trying to get a more painterly look than a comicbook style coloring but am losing much of the noodling detail that i liked about the line drawing. but if i paint it right it wont matter. need to define the robots and the characters a little more, their faces in particular are bothering me. maybe they are too defined in comparison to the rest?

Liking the destruction that lies behind the characters and interesting interpretation of the brief.

As for the characters I think I would just suggest some more emotion in their expression and pose to convey either shock, fright, loss, lonliness...or whatever the story is... (I'm sure this is to come anyway...)

Good Stuff,

added some textures to the bg, going in with hard edged brush to better define the entire image. i continue to flatten the image as i work.

realized that i was getting too 'precious' with the whole piece and everything started to look really, really flat. so i went in with a hard brush and noodled around, refining everywhere. the textures were becoming overplayed so i created my own by scribbling over certain spots, varying hue and opacity.

added a fog layer and took advantage of ps blending modes. so far so good. just a few more touchups and i will be happy with the whole piece.

it was suggested to modify the faces of the characters to show some type of emotion but i feel that a stoic look of determination best fit the mood and theme. still toying with the idea of a cat or some other animal to accompany our protagonaists.

working on the tattoos on a seperate layer, blending mode on multiply. painting and erasing at 100% opacity and then turning the whole layer down a bit so that the flesh tones come through.

My thoughts so far are- I agree with giving the kid more of an expression. I also think you should push the morning light a bit more , some rim lights on objects and suchlike.

Really great linework and this is a wonderful entry.
