View Full Version : Rigid Bodies Questions
Peechylyfe 01-02-2003, 03:55 AM HI all,
I have been reading everyday and have not posted so this is my first and figure someone out there will have some input....
Here is the prob, i am hanging christmas balls from a Christmas tree, its an animated short for school... More details on that later. Anyway, i am looking for a way to get the balls to swing and shake a bit as the tree moves and talks (the trees are alive). As of now i am using a rigid bodies and cannot completly get it to work properly, i have the nail constraint -ed to a "rivet" point on the Geom... Its workin somewhat, but its not right and i am looking for help on this topic :) maya's help is not much help on this so any info would be sooo greatly appreciated.
Thanks
:p

Can you give us some details of what its not doing correctly ?

its almost like there is no gravity, its just spinning and not reacting to the animation of the joints. I just want a bit of overlaping action so that the are not just stiff.

Try adding some forces such as turbulance etc to get them moving abit you could also play around with the mass properties..

hey, i have tried that as well as a gravity field, is this the way to go about doing something like this? i am messing around with the nail constraint and not having much luck at all

i have attached an old dynamics test scene of mine - nothing fancy - i'm not sure if this is of any help to you - but here it goes
the zipped scene file (http://195.34.140.197/shared/dynamicstest.zip)

Sounds like a ok method to me, mind you there are always more then 1 way to do things in Maya.

just make the balls rigid (apply a gravity field) and use nail constraints.
1. create the nail constraint
2. move the nail cons to the place where the ball is connected to the tree.
3. parent the nail under one of the pieces of the tree
now shake the tree. you probably need to adjust the weights of the rigid balls to get your desired effect

You can also try "springs" with different stiffness and rest length settings instead of nails. Might look more interesting.
