View Full Version : Thumbnail viewer for Maya?
Gabriel VAlles 04-20-2006, 04:47 PM Does anyone know of a thumnail viewer or asset library plugin for Maya.
I have a ton of .ma files that I would like to be able to view and drag and drop into Maya as needed.
I know about the Level Tools plugin. but I need something that automatically generates a preview.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know someone in my year who wrote a project management tool which featured this, I'll point him towards this thread.

It would be nice to see Maya get built in thumbnail generation built into windows directly.. like 3dsmax perhaps

Thread hi-Jack :)
Also just a minor thing does anyone ever have a problem just opening a maya scene file through windows and finding Maya starts up but all viewports are missing? Only way around it I find is to open Maya first and then open up the file, very dodgy

yes Koogle. Execute the mb or ma file, and when maya starts and the viewports are all gray, click in the perspective button in the toolbox. If yuo have the toolbox hided, unhide it, and click that icon. your scene will appear...

right, apparently at present it only works on maya 6.5 on linux but he plans to make it work on all platforms at a later date, check it out here http://www.fusionbox.co.uk/gallery.htm
It's all MEL code so you may be able to modify it for windows if you know about that stuff.

Looks promising. I don't know mel script but there is a guy here who does. I'll have him take a look at it.

there is a built in feature to make thumbs for scene files in maya too
1. open render view, click view/grab swatch to hypershade/visor
2. select region in render view and mmb drag to sceneFile in hapershade/visor
voila, thumbnails for scene files! :-)

Thanks TF,
good to know. I have about 3000 files though so I need an automated way to do this.

but the way Gabriel VAlles was talking, is the way 3dsmax does it. It shows automaticly the viewport in the thumbnail. I know that it works like TF said, but it is a little frustrating to put it in 3000 files. Alias sure could solve that(Or should I say autodesk). hehe
