This is a piece I am working on for a DVD title my
company is releasing this month called "Mr. Hell".
it's a low-budget, crappy horror flick that isn't even
slightly scary, and i highly recommend that you don't
waste your money on it if by some slight chance you
come across it at your local Circuit City. Anyway,
here is the progression of the piece...
I started out with this photograph: http://www.maverickentertainment.cc/images/mr-hell-226.jpg
As you can see, this dude isn't scary at all. in fact,
he looks kind of ridiculous with that chainsaw. So, my
goal in this instance is to make "Mr. Hell" actually
look frightening. So I decided to make half of his
face melt off, since there is a scene in the film
where he gets dissolved by toxic chemicals before
coming back alive to get his cheesy revenge.
First, I masked our friend out with the polygonal lasso, and then added some contrast, color balancing, and a gradient map:

Next I threw in a quick homemade background and added a couple more contrast layers and a curves layer, along with a few custom adjustment layers in order to stylize the image a bit...

Now the next step is to make this dude look halfway scary. So I decided to use the face from another piece of mine and composite it with Mr. Hell's face to create the effect of his face melting away. This is the piece in question that I took the face from:

I took the face and composited it over Mr. Hell's, and rotated it so that the mouth and eyes and stuff lined up. Made it a color burn layer.

Next I composited a small part of another skull in order to add some fangs.

Then, all I did was mask out half of the face, and, voila!
