View Full Version : UVs dont stay when export in max
ivanGQ 04-19-2006, 02:06 PM Hi all, I just evaluating modo, and I am quite pleased with it, especially the unwrap UV, works better then pelt map in max8, but...
Here is a problem I get, I modelled a characters head in Max, and a mate told me about modo's uv unwrap. So I gave it a try. Export model as OBJ and open it in modo, unwrap it nicley and then save it and import in max again, but UVs are not there, not the one modo made. I try export to OBJ, but same.
Browsing threw the modo forum I saw that you need to freese the geometry and then export, but as I dont have internet home (so cant try it out) i am wondering if this would solve my problem?
Cheers...

Hi IvanGQ,
I use Modo's OBJ export all the time and a couple of things I have learned to watch out for are... Try to keep things simple, use only a single UV map and make sure all the polygons in your model are added to that map, even if they don't require texturing.
Hope this helps,

thanks for the reply, but yep, I have done that originally, made the uvs simple as possible. I cant find anywhere to tweak the settings for export to OBJ. The originall mapping I apply in max is the same even after export. Any new sugestions would be excellent, thanks again M-CLK
could it be something to do with your obj import settings in max?
I've just tried saving out an obj file from modo,it opened both in lw and xsi with UVs intact...
perhaps you can do this test: try exporting an obj from max, open it in modo and then save it as .lwo....work on it,then before exporting it back to obj make sure your new UV map is the only UV map in there (delete any other UV maps that may have come from max),and for good measure you can even apply it to your object's material before export - see if that works

I'm not sure about the Max side of things as I only export to XSI, but generally speaking if the UV's are wrong on a model in XSI, it's because it didn't export correctly out of Modo - it's a good idea to quickly load the OBJ back into Modo to check the UV's. In most cases I have fixed the problem by making sure that ALL polygons are added to a single UV map and any redundant UV maps are deleted to avoid confusion.
I've also run into problems when trying to export objects with multiple layers. The UV's will be fine for the first layer but scrambled on the rest. I have taken to exporting models a layer at a time to be safe.

Hi guys, well I was trying stuff out last night and no love...Here is what I have done.
In max I have deleted all the UVs form the UV unwrap mod. Exported it, opend the obj in modo, unwraped it. Saved it as lwo, then freeze (dont know what this does exactly but..), export to OBJ and try open in max (import) and no uvs same as before export to modo. But on import in max I get the message telling me 1440 unknown commands (mabe a different number, not shure). Then I tried to export in asci Maya. And in maya there is no uvs. I only have one layer for all, and all my poligonas are in the uv map. this is driving me mad...I tried to import obj in maya, and still no uvs. So, the export seems to be wrong, but cant see any config boxes for OBJ export.
Cheers guys

I seem to be having the same problem in Maya. When i re-import the OBJ back into maya the Uvs did not come with it. It is almost as if the UVs from modo didnt export with the obj, maybe thats it. I've tried exporting as an ascii file as well with the same result.
btw what do you mean by "freezing" the mesh?

Freezing the mesh just makes the subD in actual geometry...aparently, maybe no, but thats what happens. Any way, i managed to sort out that problem, and it was a stupid thing that I didnt see, and that was that I had 2 uv maps, and the first one was the one exported from max, and the second was the one I needed, as OBJ just supports one uv map...this was pointed out to me by M-CLK and LNT.
Just delete that first map and you will be fine...good luck
