Hey guys! I've been lurking on here for far too long. I'm heading to Italy next month for a while and I'm bringing my camera!

I figure I can take all sorts of pictures as reference for an upcoming modeling challenge. You guys have any requests?

I've been looking on http://conceptships.blogspot.com/ a lot and have really been enjoying the artwork there. I especially love Manchu's work. I don't know much about him since his website is in French (i think). Would be awesome to do some modeling based on his designs if possible. Roberto, I wonder if we could get him involved? I know on occasion artists have come in to give us their blessings.

Another idea I had just now, still life. But much more than the crappy basic 3D tutorial. Here are some neat examples along with the more traditional versions.

I am excited for the cars challenge coming up. I think an idea for a future challenge that would be alot of fun is Cryptozoology("The study of hidden animals"). Animals for this would be bigfoot, lochness monster, and any from the list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptids

I want to 'second' tuckerhcool's idea for the next challenge to have cryptozooology as the next topic. There's room for imagination and the possibility to bring something to life that may or may not exist.

I'd be interested in the group or all participants contribute sort of challenge sometime in the future, maybe an environment or something big from the concept site Japetus posted. Basically finding a nice ambitious concept to work of.

It's hard to find a team who work with the same pimpline. We can't just drop everything we did separately in the new scene with basic understanding a units egal 1 meter for example and get something good.

It's mean coordination and one person of his a coordination/leader don't thing many people would like that.

But If it's a production simulation and people understand the meaning of hierachy. OK

So I thought of a fun modeling challenge while I was in the toy isle yesterday. Make a Hot Wheels or Matchbox car as a high rez real world model.

I haven't made a vehicle since school and I recently passed up applying to a position at Turn 10 because I haven't modeled cars in forever.

The challenge would be a pit of a twist on the usual vehicle modeling challenge because it would ask artists to go out and buy the car of their choice and model it up to the level required of a racing game (Forza/Burnout) or movie (Fast5/GI Joe). The cars range from 2-5$ so I don't think it'd be crazy to have people go and get the reference to have in hand. That way artists model from what they see and not just blueprints or whatever from the internet.

That's a great idea! I've always liked Hotwheels car designs and wondered what they'd be like "realistic". :)

I'd be up for a car challenge too. It'd be good to put my copy of Silo to use once again...

How about modelling characters named after drinks such as "The Famous Grouse", "Old Speckled Hen" or even "Tactical Nuclear Penguin"?

Okay, bad idea. Every one would enter with the last one I mentioned...

has there been a challenge to model musical instruments? I've always wanted to make a Banjo.

Musical instruments sounds great. Just to make it more interesting, it could be a challenge to place the instrument in a diorama which - along with the main instrument - gives a hint to the life style of the musician. The whole diorama could be a character in itself...that kind of thing.

Or how would it be with "Alternate Reality"?

Ok, my last try. Modelling movie posters. Any movie poster ever made, make it as real as possible. I am thinking Conan the Barbarian (the good one), Wreckit Ralph, Goonies, Starwars, any Indianna Jones, and some James Bonds.

IDEA #1
"Reality Reversal" - Turn a cartoon character realistic or a real person into a caricature.
Examples: A gritty real world Mario or a hyper-stylized Will Smith.

IDEA #2
"Reboots" - Every summer, the movie box office is inundated with franchises. Extrapolate and update a popular movie character for a hypothetical franchise reboot.
Examples: A modern redesign of Gizmo from "Gremlins" or Johnny-5 from "Short Circuit"

IDEA #3
"The Wonderful World of Disney" - Disney owns a lot of properties these days. Recreate, update, or merge (a) Disney owned character(s).
Examples: Steampunk Iron Man. Jack Sparrow 2099. Darth Hanna Montana.

IDEA #4
"Mascots" - Whether cartoony or realistic, some characters are so iconic that they end up being the face of a company. Mario symbolizes Nintendo as much as Lara Croft brings to mind Eidos. Create an original mascot. The more iconic the better.

IDEA #5
"Retrofuturism" - Create a character, environment, or vehicle that embodies the future, as envisioned by somebody from a specific period.
Examples: The Jetsons envisioned the future from an early 1960s perspective. Back to the Future II envisioned 2015 from a 1985/1989 perspective. The Rocketeer & Sky Captain imagined the future from a 1940's perspective. Looper imagined the future from a 2012 perspective. Steampunk is a vision of tomorrow brought to you via the Victorian era & Jules Verne.

IDEA #6
"Cosplay" - Dress up time everybody! Model yourself as a specific character. This time, YOU get to be the hero or villain. Emphasis on likeness.

I would suggest making an 80ies cartoon icon but in a 2013 version. f.e. "Jem and the Holograms"

Have you seen how many Star Wars challenges there have been? :D
I think a tribute to the original would be appropriate.

Boone

Ray had a hobby since leaving film making where he would make Bronze-casts of his creations. That was most likely due to the foam skins on his creatures deteriorating over the years, and they made for great replacements.

Maybe we could have a bronze-cast contest for Ray, making it slightly different from the last challenge.

Considering this further, and for those who aren't so keen on a Harryhausen challenge, we could also give the option to cover Stan Winston's creations as well, in a bronze-cast style.

Two legends in film vfx have now left us in recent years, and maybe we could pay tribute to both...hmmm..

Winston vs Harryhausen? Pit an Alien Queen against a Ymir? A Gargoyle and a Selenite? T-Rex vs Gwangi?

Maybe, we could do a buddy-challenge, where each entry sees two artists working together?

Yah I see it.. But this not clearly all Star Wars tribute.. Just because every artist use a challenge as excuse for doing SW stuffs ;)
