Hey guys! I've been lurking on here for far too long. I'm heading to Italy next month for a while and I'm bringing my camera!

I figure I can take all sorts of pictures as reference for an upcoming modeling challenge. You guys have any requests?

I've been looking on http://conceptships.blogspot.com/ a lot and have really been enjoying the artwork there. I especially love Manchu's work. I don't know much about him since his website is in French (i think). Would be awesome to do some modeling based on his designs if possible. Roberto, I wonder if we could get him involved? I know on occasion artists have come in to give us their blessings.

I am excited for the cars challenge coming up. I think an idea for a future challenge that would be alot of fun is Cryptozoology("The study of hidden animals"). Animals for this would be bigfoot, lochness monster, and any from the list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cryptids

Surgeuk

I want to 'second' tuckerhcool's idea for the next challenge to have cryptozooology as the next topic. There's room for imagination and the possibility to bring something to life that may or may not exist.

I'd be interested in the group or all participants contribute sort of challenge sometime in the future, maybe an environment or something big from the concept site Japetus posted. Basically finding a nice ambitious concept to work of.

It's hard to find a team who work with the same pimpline. We can't just drop everything we did separately in the new scene with basic understanding a units egal 1 meter for example and get something good.

It's mean coordination and one person of his a coordination/leader don't thing many people would like that.

But If it's a production simulation and people understand the meaning of hierachy. OK

So I thought of a fun modeling challenge while I was in the toy isle yesterday. Make a Hot Wheels or Matchbox car as a high rez real world model.

I haven't made a vehicle since school and I recently passed up applying to a position at Turn 10 because I haven't modeled cars in forever.

The challenge would be a pit of a twist on the usual vehicle modeling challenge because it would ask artists to go out and buy the car of their choice and model it up to the level required of a racing game (Forza/Burnout) or movie (Fast5/GI Joe). The cars range from 2-5$ so I don't think it'd be crazy to have people go and get the reference to have in hand. That way artists model from what they see and not just blueprints or whatever from the internet.

Musical instruments sounds great. Just to make it more interesting, it could be a challenge to place the instrument in a diorama which - along with the main instrument - gives a hint to the life style of the musician. The whole diorama could be a character in itself...that kind of thing.

IDEA #1
"Reality Reversal" - Turn a cartoon character realistic or a real person into a caricature.
Examples: A gritty real world Mario or a hyper-stylized Will Smith.

IDEA #2
"Reboots" - Every summer, the movie box office is inundated with franchises. Extrapolate and update a popular movie character for a hypothetical franchise reboot.
Examples: A modern redesign of Gizmo from "Gremlins" or Johnny-5 from "Short Circuit"

IDEA #3
"The Wonderful World of Disney" - Disney owns a lot of properties these days. Recreate, update, or merge (a) Disney owned character(s).
Examples: Steampunk Iron Man. Jack Sparrow 2099. Darth Hanna Montana.

IDEA #4
"Mascots" - Whether cartoony or realistic, some characters are so iconic that they end up being the face of a company. Mario symbolizes Nintendo as much as Lara Croft brings to mind Eidos. Create an original mascot. The more iconic the better.

IDEA #5
"Retrofuturism" - Create a character, environment, or vehicle that embodies the future, as envisioned by somebody from a specific period.
Examples: The Jetsons envisioned the future from an early 1960s perspective. Back to the Future II envisioned 2015 from a 1985/1989 perspective. The Rocketeer & Sky Captain imagined the future from a 1940's perspective. Looper imagined the future from a 2012 perspective. Steampunk is a vision of tomorrow brought to you via the Victorian era & Jules Verne.

IDEA #6
"Cosplay" - Dress up time everybody! Model yourself as a specific character. This time, YOU get to be the hero or villain. Emphasis on likeness.

I think a tribute to the original would be appropriate.

Boone

Ray had a hobby since leaving film making where he would make Bronze-casts of his creations. That was most likely due to the foam skins on his creatures deteriorating over the years, and they made for great replacements.

Maybe we could have a bronze-cast contest for Ray, making it slightly different from the last challenge.

Considering this further, and for those who aren't so keen on a Harryhausen challenge, we could also give the option to cover Stan Winston's creations as well, in a bronze-cast style.

Two legends in film vfx have now left us in recent years, and maybe we could pay tribute to both...hmmm..

Winston vs Harryhausen? Pit an Alien Queen against a Ymir? A Gargoyle and a Selenite? T-Rex vs Gwangi?

Maybe, we could do a buddy-challenge, where each entry sees two artists working together?

This challange would put artists at the edge of creativity. The contestants shall modell and texture a diorama filled with people, monsters, heroes or whatever it takes to be interesting, and it shall have a theme and be low poly. EX:

Dogfight in the sky
Assaut in a bank
Heroes in action
Marvel vs DC

Desert storm
Sci-fi war
Playing games with family
Heavy metal show
Medieval tavern
thief's guild

M.A.S.K. is not bad, but a bit narrow. I have no familiarity with it and was hoping to participate in the next challenge. Could widen it to all 80's cartoons, but I think they did that one already, not 100% sure.

05-22-2014, 02:13 PM
First, Sega Mega Drive was called Sega Genesis here in the states. Great console. I was more of a SNES fanboy though.

Second, I would necessarily disqualify the Mario & Sonic franchises. They're great. I'd just not allow Mario or Sonic themselves, opting instead to give some of the more ancillary characters room to shine.

Third, seeing how gritty reboots seem to be all the rage these days, I think that it might be cool to do a HCM challenge on gritty rebooting 8bit/16bit era game characters. That is, assuming that Roberto goes with a game theme. Otherwise, I'd go with gritty rebooting old 80s TV/movie characters.

Looking at Giger's concept work for Jodorowsky's Dune for inspiration, perhaps a challenge could be "Giger style" for any item of interest: A Giger-esque concept for a building, car, plane, PC case or animal. Anything goes, but it has to look "Giger".

It's not just this site. I noticed that other sites are having trouble launching comps lately, even minis. I don't know if it's a money or commitment issue, but I do see it tanking overall traffic on some of these sites. In fact, there seems to be a bit of an overall depressing lull going around on a lot of sites.

CG Talk is doing okay, from what I can see, but a lot of other communities and their members seem to be phoning in the enthusiasm for the past year or two. Maybe it's due to the stream of closures or the increased complexity. I don't know. Maybe we need a couple more big sponsored contests to get people talking and excited again.

Anyway. I'm sure that Roberto has something planned. It's just summer and people get distracted.

robo3687
07-07-2014, 05:09 AM
in regards to the lack of participation lately is it possible that perhaps some people aren't seeing enough incentive to enter?

any time I've entered it's never been about any sort of prize but I know that there are people who would be more likely to enter something if there was some sort of 'pot o' gold' at the end of the rainbow so to speak.

It could be something as simple as US$25 in a paypal payment, or a digital-tutors lesson, or a month of a CG cookie subscription, or a gnomon workshop DVD (or a month of a subscription there for $59), even an amazon voucher.

It doesn't need to be some big extravagant thing, just enough to encourage involvement.

I owe a lot of my early progression in 3D to this contest and I would hate to see this place die out, so I'm just throwing ideas out there for consideration.

EDIT: and as for topics it might be best if they are more creatively open. I know in the past we've focused a lot on recreating things in exacting detail, or recreating things from someones body of work but sometimes that can limit peoples interest in participating (the Ansel Adams challenge is one that particularly comes to mind).

So if we went more creatively open with the topics they could be things like:
- create the ultimate 80's action hero
- design a scifi interior
- design a spaceship
- create a comic book character (or a live action version of an established comic book character)
- recreate a room in your house
- straight self portraits (or creating a character where you are the base for it)
- militarised animals

so the topics would be less 'pick something off this list" and more "here's an idea...run with it"

again...just throwing ideas out there.

Sweet lord, an 80's HMC would be cool as.

Can't go wrong with Geiger, though.

I haven't been here in aaaaages either.

It's not just this site. I noticed that other sites are having trouble launching comps lately, even minis. I don't know if it's a money or commitment issue, but I do see it tanking overall traffic on some of these sites. In fact, there seems to be a bit of an overall depressing lull going around on a lot of sites.
I don't go to many other sites so I wasn't aware of that. But I prefer to think that everyone is just too busy with work to be active.

Funny you should mention that. I notice the Digital Matte Painting mini-challenge has a prize associated with it now. Just sayin'

Yeah, people do seem to enjoy more the topics were you are taking someone's existing concept and putting your own spin to it as opposed to trying to create an exact copy of something.

cough* Geiger *cough :D

Still no new challenge? Well, maybe it wouldn't hurt for everyone to take a break for a while...

Oh, if not Giger, then with a new Doctor next month...a Doctor Who challenge? "The Adventures of the 13th Doctor" perhaps?

Welllll, no disrespect to the master but after looking at pages and pages of Giger's work for inspiration and ideas it all starts to look the same. I'm sure that will pass once I settle on something but I'd be fine with the Dr. Who universe as well.

Ahhh man, but I just got here! A lot of times when I'm trying to just sculpt so I can learn things I get all caught up on "what to sculpt", as if I'm doing something for a reason other than learning. This is where challenges come in handy.

Then I suppose we best not take a break then! ^_^

I'm hesitant to throw them into the hat as they might not be to everyone's taste, but what about The Wild West or A Century of Aviation?

I sat out the last couple because I had so much going on and work really ramped up. I think that's just about enough time sitting on the sidelines.

I'm in for either, or even a fusion of both. Let's just get something started!

Masters of Anime?

nuzzletops
07-23-2014, 07:00 PM
What would masters of Anime entail? Make a 3D model of an anime character?

That could be a good one, the term Anime might turn some people off but taking a simplistic cartoon character and making it your own in 3D can be really fun, and beginners could get into it because it's not as intense as realistic anatomy, and experienced people can take their models further with their knowledge and style.

Thought id give my input. I would love to see an 80's movie theme like others mentioned before. Do a prop or a charater. I don't think I would participate in an Anime challenge. I find Anime less interesting.

nuzzletops

You could do Heavy Metal, GI Joe, Transformers, all from the 80s! Luckily there's some anime from my Teen years that has stuck with me (Bebop, Eva, Akir, Ghost in the Shell), that I can find something interesting. Hell Anime is so crazy that even if it's not up your alley you can find something crazy (My Neighbor Totoro).

Well I just posted in the other thread. If its anime, I'd prefer it opened up to more than just "Masters of". I suppose I could go for 80s as well. I really crapped out on that one the last time.

Roberto will post a master thread detailing everything. We then follow up with our own individual WIP threads. You'll see.

nuzzletops
07-24-2014, 06:35 PM
I'll ignore the other thread since we're having the same conversation in both places, lol...

I think that if we let the users decide too much about the challenge then we're just going to get stuff that certain people WANT to make, if you WANT to make a certain thing then you should probably just do that.

I like the idea of challenges because they put you out of your comfort zone subsequently expanding your skills.

I'm with you though, lets just get a new challenge started! I really want to participate.

That's sort of the point, trying to attract people to participate. People tend to work harder things they WANT to make, I know I do. Most of the past challenges have been user ideas anyway.

Roberto, I don't care whatever you decide. Just give me enough wiggle room to do something odd. :D

This is a link to a page that has a great list of 80's cartoons. I didn't know the list would be so huge I grew up in the 70's and 80's and thought I had seen them all.
