View Full Version : Dam'it! Maya is terribly slow :(
Hello,
Maya is actually the best CG app i've ever seen and used.
But it's getting slower and slower - even in simple modelling mode.
I don't know why and it makes me sad :(
Having many ideas and pictures in mind, and being unable to realize them due to
a lack in speed, is a torture for me.
-----------------------------------------
Some technical specifications:
CPU: AMD AthlonXP 2,4 GHz
RAM: 512 MB
HDD: 300GB ( 89% free ), 3 GB Virtual Memory
GFX: nVidia GeForce4 Ti4200
OS: WindowsXP Professional SP2
Maya: Version 6.0
Average processes: 29-30
I simply cannot imagine my computer being too old to run Maya properly?
Well, ok... Slowly but surely i should think about buying a new one,
but it should be enough to do some modelling up to 500'000 faces
and raytracing/FG/GI/Caustics, etc.
It's clear to me that these things are time-consuming, but not more than 5 days !?!
That's not a joke... it took 5 days to render a spiky sphere (~3000 faces) using MR and GI/FG/Caustics.
I cry my eyes out :(
Working [and having fun] under such conditions is not possible !
Please help me...
Thank you in advance!
Ciao,
Lex

I don't know that much about this stuff and I don't want to irratate you by saying this but...
I don't know if with 512 Ram and the Nvidia Titanium card I would expect to fast of performance....
I hope people correct me if I'm wrong and this ends up working for you but thats just my first thoughts : )
(I have a titanium card in one of my computers not running maya and I haven't been the most satisfied with it)

Sorry...1 more thing. I didn't install Maya on my computer with the G4TI card because I read this when I purchased it.
From Alias Hardware Spec Recomendations
"Nvidia GeForce256, GeForce2, GeForce3, GeForce4 series
There are many cards based on GeForce256, GeForce2, GeForce3 and GeForce4 chipsets. Nvidia and Alias do not recommend these cards for use with Maya as you may experience various refresh, display and stability problems and inadequate performance.
We suggest you choose from Nvidia's workstation cards instead, such as the Quadro families which are much better suited to high-end 3D packages such as Maya."

That's odd, my hardware is similar to yours and I can't remember a time when a production quality render took more than 7 minutes per frame MR or software.
I'm rockin' a GF4 Ti4200 128mb, Athlon XP 2600 (2ghz), 512 mem, 120gig 7200 RPMs, Windows XP SP2, Maya 7. I know the Ti4200 came in a 64mb edition also, if that's what you're using then that might explain the problem, otherwise I have no idea. Check your card driver Run > dxdiag > Display tab. I'm using nv4_disp.dll (version: 6.14.0010.8421). I'm a relative rendering noob though so I'm just throwing this out there. Hope it helps.

First thing I would recommend is get more RAM, it's dirt cheap again. Second I would seriously think about purchsing a better video card. Gf TI is NOT a Maya friendly card. I still don't understnd why are people building systems without prieviously checking hardware specs on Alias|Autodesk site. It will save you a whole lot of time and frustration if you simply read the specs. Maya is NOT an entry level application. It is a high end/level 3d software requiring pretty hefty system specs.
if i got it right, you'r problem is that the system renders too slow (5 days for a sphere :D)?
then the graphic card doesn't affect the rendetime (only if you use hardware rendering)... And the processor isn't that slow in these days though... only ~2.5 times slower than an 3800 x2 i guess... neither the RAM isn't a problem for your task, if it were, then mentalray should have outputed an 'out of memory error' ;)
So back to our problem, since you said you're using gi/caustics, did you assing a photon shader to the objects in your scene? I think that was needed in maya 6.0, otherwise mentalray would emit photons without storing them, looping like this for hours, days, months :D
Thanks for your answers!
The thing is, such a low performance is quite new to me, because Maya has worked fine on my system for a long time. i.e. my avatar took about ~30 mins. to render in MR with production quality and raytracing turned on.

Absolutely correct! ;)

HAH! Good point. No I haven't. Let's try it......

I have an athlon xp 2.4 + processor with N-Vidia quadro fx500-600 128mb agp card and 1 gig DDR ram and everything works fine with maya 7.0
The geforce cards are catalogued as home class but the quadro are catalogued as workstation class. I have been doing rendering at 1024 x 1280 px and they only take some minutes like 15 minutes to an hour for some of them. You should definitely consider on trading your card for a better quadro one and raise the ram to 1 gig or more.
Beside that you can not obtain hardware rendering or certain particle rendering with the geforce.
