View Full Version : Vehicle: Supermarine Spitfire
Jeffo 01-01-2003, 04:02 PM This is my latest model I just finished, i'm looking for any crits before i start texturing it.
Any missed parts would be really appreciated as well as i had too many different reference pictures and i wasnt sure what versions they were.
thanks :bounce:

I'm no expert, but after watching some references that's what you should correct:

Looks good overall, but the canopy seems a little large and missing the characteristic "bubble" section. Some spit models did have clipped wings, but I think rounded wing tips were more common.
Did you check Suuland for blueprints?;

Good luck with it, the Spitfire is one of my favorite aircraft designs, I've always thought that the bubble canopy and rounded lines gave it a deceptivley "friendly" look

One of the things that immediatly jumps out at me is the scale of the panel seams. They look too large and not 'sharp' enough. If the plane was in realworld scale then the radius on most of the panel seams would be about 2 inches which is way too large.
As for missing parts - the arial wire between the tail and the cockpit antenna is missing.
Keep working on it though, all the basics are there.

Hey guys,
thanks for the great yseful comments. This is my first attempt at modeling a plane, and im not really adept in the knowledge of the different parts and accessories on them, so please excuse me. :)
azazel: Good call on that. I fixed the connection between the wings and the body. Good eye!
terryford: Thanks, i grabbed the original blueprints from there, then when i went to get some reference photos, i must have followed a more recent date one as the bubble was gone, and the wings were clipped. I do agree though, the original versions with the bubble and the roundness have a much more friendly appeal.
bliz: You're right, i'm going to have to scale those down abit, and as for the antenna from what i found in reference photos some had the hard sharp one right behind the cockpit, and others the more flexible wire one. Does anyone know why some had this one and some had the other? or if they had both and i just missed it? Thanks very much for the comment!
Thanks guys, ill upload a new shot when its done.

I think that is hard to just say that’s wrong and that’s right about the antenna. They were build during the hole war and the different antenna could be just a more "modern" antenna on one of the pictures...that’s what I think.
I could be wrong though

Good work:)
As a spitfire fan I have a few tips regading the model:
a) I think the line between top of the cockpit and the talefin should be more horizontal. Now it seems like it falls to much downwards like on the Stuka.
b) I also think you would be better of with the wings not clipped at the tips.
c) Perhaps the entire nose of the plane is a bit big. im not sure about that one..
d) the cockpit seems a little big compared to landing gear?
e)And i am not sure if it's as smooth as this between the tale rudder and the tale wings??
Hope this was to any help:)
Keep up the work.

It's not really a case of getting the antenna shape correct rather that there should be a piece of wire stretching from the top of the antenna to a small stub on the tip of the tail. Most illustrations and blueprints don't show this as the wire is very thin and hard to see when the plane is in the air.
