I've a scene with a single ocean that I've been rendering perfectly happily for just over a week that's suddenly decided to render garbage, but only when I render it outside of the gui using a command line render, from the GUI it looks fine. It's like the whole thing has been scaled massively in the vertical. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

I'm using mental ray, Gui render is simply Render->Batch Render, The command line version looks like this:

Render -s 1 -e 150 -x 720 -y 576 StormWatertest.mb

Any chance it's rendering from the wrong camera?

that was the first place I looked. I have only the one renderable camera.

Nothing's coming to mind. Can you post some pictures?

as it turns out it was to do with camera scaling in an obscure kind of way. I've been using an imported xsi animation on a null to which I was parenting the maya camera. turns out the null was scaled by around 50. I set the null scale back to 1,1,1, re-imported and re-parented and it all worked out just fine.

once again, and I double checked it, rendering from within Maya is fine, rendering from a command line using render is the thing that busts it.

Thanks for the input.
