"Lonely..."

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* You have 30, (count them 30!) minutes to do your sketch. IF you go beyond the
assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has
expired, along with the FINAL drawing.
* Also, I will add a new voting category, called THE FASTEST DRAW.
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

20 minutes, completed in Painter and finished in Photoshop. I had a wild stab at this theme and the more i painted the less figurative it became until i ended up with this, a much more abstract expressionist piece than how it looked when i started it.
it makes me feel alone when i look at it, so I think it sticks with the brief.

Paintbow: I never seen a great use of lenseflare like this congrat! superb and simple

Vitreous: fantastic abstract work. Textures, colors and shapes are blending togeters perfectly. wow

Here mine, hope you like it. It's inspired by a very good book by Alain Bombard, Naufragé Volontaire (The voyage of the Heretique). This guy cross the Atlantic ocean in a 12foots zodiac without food and freshwater(yeah, we can drink saltwater in little quantity) to proof that we can survive in these conditions. He survive 65 days! this was in 1949. Very good book, I recommend it.

Mine's rather personal, I am a transexual female and my family doesn't really seem to understand that or take it seriously so here's how I spend a lot of my time, alone with a mirror trying to understand life.

I did two but I'm still not happy with either. Especially after seeing what Goro was able to do in only 25 minutes (Amazing!).

Anyway, the first idea came from the phrase "Everyone dies alone" and the second from the idea that you don't have to literally be alone to feel lonely.

There are a lot of posts in this topic, so I guess "lonely..." is a pretty popular feeling around here! I like all the new people showing up. It's very cool. I feel like doing some community service, so here are some ideas...

the_nr: I like the colors; grey and black work very well for a topic like lonely. The child and his bear look nicely detailed. The teddy bear makes it much sadder for some reason.
alemaopedro: The visual style of this sketch is really cool! I really like the red outline colored in with light washes. It makes for a neat effect. The exaggerated perspective on the seesaw and his leg are cool, too. If you don't mind, I think I might use this style for a few of my sketches.
DekuBoy: This uses the huge canvas + small guy composition well. A lot of people use it, and why not? There is really no better way to show loneliness easliy.
rawwad: Yours has really nice colors. I'm not sure what the orange/pink stuff is, but I don't think it matters much; The bird is the important part. Good work!
daw: You may have the most emotional one out of all of these because of the caption you've included. The little red accents also bring more life into the sketch.
paintbox: You also have also made great use of the huge canvas + small guy idea! It is one of the best ones like that. The light and shadows cast look especially good.
lhz: Welcome to the DSG! Wow, this has got a lot of atmosphere in it. The dark blue colors work well with the topic, too. I can tell that with a little more time this could be cleaned up and turned into a very cool finished painting. Hopefully you keep up with sketching here, as it will definitely improve your skills. I hope to see you around here again!
SuperMuscle: You also have used dark blue colors to create a nice, moody work. I think it is a little hard to see the wolf, though. Maybe if the moonlight was cast more on just the wolf, it would help make it stand out more. As is, it is still a very good one!
Overchord: Welcome back! I like the mouse/rat, mostly the shadow cast on the brick wall behind it. It makes it look like it was hanging out in the dark, and a flashlight or something was shined on it. Very good effect! Maybe I should try Artweaver, it looks cool.
Vitreous: Hey, theres nothing wrong with abstract expressionist stuff! sometimes it is the best way to go when you have to paint an intangible topic like loneliness. I think it is very good.
Louis.cho: This is one idea I would have never come up with, but I wish I had. Being out at sea seems to be pretty lonely. Maybe I'll check out The Voyage of the Heretique. It looks like the kind of book I would like.
LabyrinthineMind: It doesn't suck too bad. I can tell where you were going with it, and I'm sure I would have looked cooler had you been able to make it the way you wanted. About the pen nib, I have no idea how those are supposed to come out, I'm just hoping I won't have to deal with that issue for some time.... hopefully?
GSmiley: Pink!? What the hell were you thinking....
Goro: Great as always. Probably sketch of the day, maybe sketch of the week.
ChristinaRH: It is not bad! I think you just ran into the same problem I usually do. With the time limits, you need to decide what is most important and only do details for those parts. Your line work is very good and detailed, it just looks like you ran out of time. If this were colored and finished more, I know it would look cool. Next time, try to focus your time more on the parts you think should be most important.
Vahn: I gave up on Artrage after a day. The brushes just do whatever they want to and I don't feel like I'm making the painting. Instead it feels like the painting is making itsself. You have a much better grasp on the reins than I do, though. Its cool putting your avatar in a famous painting.
sivart: Welcome to the DSG! Yours is exceptional as a depiction of someone's emotions. The raincloud is hovering over just the guy/gal, and nowhere else. It makes it feel like the he/she is isolated from everything else. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but oh well... Its a really good painting nonetheless. Keep up with the sketching and post here some more!
bleumoon: You also used the black 'n' grey 'n' blue colors to great effect. The blue guy's body language is very descriptive. I think the perspective on the buildings is off, but it doesn't matter much. It is a little distracting, though.
Serkeien: Your work is the most emotional of the day (sorry, daw). It is always impactful when someone makes a very personal work like this. Thank you for sharing it.
twistercash: This sketch is my favorite of the day. The textures you use are great as always on the tree framing the shot and the background. The best part is the silhouette of the man and kid. I like the man's tie and pants the most. I don't know why.
Robertt: Another dark black and grey one. It works every time. I'm surprised more people didn't use your prison idea; it seems like a natural choice for lonely. Good work.
Ham-e: Your subject is a lot like mine, only you used more talent. I like the soft misty edges and colors you used. And, unlike me, you made the guy large enough to see clearly in detail, which helps a lot.
Gord-MacDonald: I like it, the silhouette is always expressive.
nards26: Poor, lonely.... robot hair? The robot is nicely rendered. I don't know if the second, improved sketch adds a lot it. I almost always like the simpler original posts more than the refined ones.
Vizon: The second one is very good! It is one of the few funny sketches about loneliness, which isn't easy. And don't be ashamed of making little cartoony things, beacuse i can't do 'em to save my life. Be happy that you have the ability. The top sketch is better as a depressing take on loneliness, but i like the bottom more.
alfonsoperalta: Yours is probably the best overall work today. The anatomy is great (esp. feet), the textures are great, and the composition is great. Sorry about the girlfriend, man. I just hope you don't spend too much of your time sitting naked in a closet...
Crimsonstring: Another funny loneliness sketch! Great work. I don't know what kind of rodent you've got there, but it has a lot of personallity!
Zeitwolf: Very abstract and expressive. I think it is best to use abstract imagery to get across ideas like these. I like how the other faces aren't detailed to help make the central character stand alone.
Nebu: Welcome to the DSG! you are the third new person today. I like your painting a whole bunch, especially the subject you chose. It is instantly identifiable that the guy is alone, which is a hard effect to get. It is one of those ideas that I wish I had come up with. I hope I see you post more stuff here!
dredsign: Welcome back. Nice natural environment and trees. I guess sometimes trees can get lonely, when there are no people to go climb them?
khanumnaow: You've got good, dark, and moody colors and cool composition. The perspective on the tower makes the character look really high, which is a good effect. I'm not sure what the purple stuff on the ground is, but it doesn't matter, so I should stop carnig about it.
Zyrinx: I like the soft texture brush you used on the highlight on the road. I would keep that brush and add it to your regular arsenal. This is another subject I wish I had come up with, very good!

Okay, that is all the critiquing I can do right now.

GSmiley: Thanks for the comments! maybe you will win post of the week!;) Your sketch is well done but as you said yourself the color choices are distracting the bright colors draw the viewers attention to places that I'm guessing you didn't intend ie: the pink part looks like an eagle(to me anyway) and I also see a human form in the wall( kind of stickman thing). These points are either good or bad...in the end its a cool looking image.

Hey thanks for the critique's, Louis.Cho and GSmiley. :)

GSmiley : your work reminds of the earlier fantasy art from the seventies (artists like Tim White, Peter Jones) , its reminiscent of the style and composition, but above all the colourscheme. And in those days these colours were quite normal.

*Sorry for the double post people. I accidently pressed submit when I wasn't really done (as you see, my unfinished post). My real post for this is the forum is actually below this one*

th_nr : I love the grayscale colors and the lighting because it really fits the mood! The teddybear also shows how loney he is and shows that it's his only "friend"! Awesome!
alemaopedro: I like sketches with cool colors and hot colors. Must be a pretty lonely guy, seesawing himself. Nice composition by the way! I like the way he looks pretty sketchy and all. Good job.
DekuBoy: All that space! Only one small guy, around a black force! Shows how isolated he is, doesn't it? Now that's something for being alone.
rawwad: Awesome use of colors! I like the drawing of the eagle by itself. Eagles do fly in packs don't they?
daw: All alone after someone's death. I love the way that the flowers are the only thing colored.
paintbox: Now where's that purple light? Don't know, but it seems the guy there doesn't want to be bothered. A very nice sketch of the guy, alone and hopeless.
Ihz: Yep, one guy there. I'd love to live there. Very interesting use the cool blue colors. The rays shoot from the trees, and the water reflects its beauty. Very big congrats on you're first sketch man!
SuperMuscle: Somehow uniquely done. A dark navy blue used to this sketch. The rocks seem transparent a bit, and the wolf too. Maybe this "transparency" feeling shows that this guy doesn't belong in this world, and may just want to dissapeare.
Overchord: I guess there's no friends for this guy when he's attacked by some cat. The background looks dull, but the mouse itself is a bright white one. It draws quick attention to him. Maybe he's an albino, that's why they don't like him. Splendid.
Vitreous: Awesome abstract expression. I love how the other colors don't interfere much with the one on the far right.
Lous.Cho: Fishin all by himself? Must take bloody forever. Nice use of cool colors and hot colors.
LabyrinthintheMind: Pretty good outcome for 15 mins! :O Just a 15 mins more, I sure bet it would've been some awesome sketch.
GSmiley: I love it. I love it alot! Pink is an awesome color, but only when it mixes with other colors like what you did. Beautiful man. Great bright lighting, and it took me a while to spot the guy. I would love to visit that cave. Tell me the address :)
Goro: Goro, Goro, Goro. You are a great influence with you're work. I love the way you've used two main colors, and it makes great compositions. Where do these great ideas come from my friend? 27 minutes?! That IS fast! Very 2 big thumbs up!
ChristinaHR: The line art is decent in a way, you can still see the expressions on her face. Running out of time is what I always get at. When you time yourself and draw each time, you'll see a big, better and faster drawing every sketch. That's what i do :p But as for a sketch, I don't see anything bad with it at all.
Vahn: Ahahaah, hey it's that famous painting! Its cool of you to place you're avatar there. Does that make you alone? It looks like real acryllic painting than how its done on the computer. Good going there.
Sivart: I guess the world hates that dude. I like how the painting focuses on the clouds as it drips rain, trailling the viewer's eyes downwards to see down more.
bluemoon: Very interesting use of colors. Completely "cool" colors, and the guy below is completely blue which is the only deep color that attracts my attention. I like it how it even gives out the mood on how he's feeling.

That's what i do :p But as for a Seetch, I don't see anything bad with it at all.
Serkeien: Greyish, whitish colors, sketchy. The style looks pretty interesting, as she looks at herself at the mirror. Maybe she likes being alone?
twistercash: Once again in a grave, maybe the person whos dead is now alone? or yeah, I'm not getting a clear image on this one, but there is so much message in this picture such as death, loneliness, usuality and commoness (maybe because of the many people there). It's a nice sketch by the way, great use of textures.
Robertt: Seems to me she's entrapped in prison. The idea and the concept is pretty awesome. The windows to freedom is all the way up there in that big room. The room is so big, and so empty, and on the corner to the right, she's all depressed.
Ham-e: Tall cliffs, all the way up there. One man, managed to climb up there all alone. Love the two simple colors you've used.
Gord-Macdonald: Awesome use of black and white. It seems that the person there feels like a nobody, an outcast, a nothing.
alfonsoperalta (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=109991): This is an awesome piece of work! You really did break up with you're girl friend? I guess it's hard to focus on one thing while doing another. The water seems to flow in slow motion which is genius. Being sad and alone feels as if time slows down. Reminds me of Romeo, always depressed when Rosaline never accepts his love, complaining how sad hours are long. vbmenu_register("postmenu_3466877", true);
nards26: I couldn't even remember if it was a 3d rendered image or a 2d drawing. It's well done, and all done in 2d! Outcasted robot, maybe he has hair :O Anyways, that is amazing for a 30 minute sketch.
Vizon: I love this one. I think it's my favourite sketch so far. It's uniquely done and the warm colors attracted me to this piece. It's amazing that you've captured a feeling of a soldier on how he feels that he's about to die.
Crimsonstring: Amusing a bit. It's got some nice details added to it. I like how it's waving its hands in the bowl goin' 'surprise'
Zeitwolf: Very artistic, maybe the crowd itself isolates the man over there. The sketchy details and style is what highlights it all.
Nebu: Black and white, playing chess all by himself. Some great mood and atmosphere.
dreddesign: Lol, that's odd :) It would've been funny if that grown naturally :)
kahnumnao: I enjoy the mood given to this sketch. The concept and idea is pretty original and nice, i already see a story out of this.
Zyrinx: You have shown that being a hobo is not all about sitting down, waving a coin but the demands of trying to survive on you're own without careful help.
Sylanya: Looking away from anatomy, you'd already get a clear image on what's going on. The detail on the woman is fantasitc, even the folds and cloth she is wearing. Hehehe, silly of you to forget it was 30 minutes and added 50 minutes more :P
KurtS: Guess he's looking at someone else he wants to be with? The blueish color fits the mood, of showing maybe how blue he's been living in. The use of the scratchy and old textures is quite useful.
Vyse_soa: The perfect imbalance. The lonely tree has no chance to the soldiers of pollution. This is a very attracting sketch and to me, the colors are what stand out.

Well done everyone!

Here's my piece. It took me 28-30 minutes. Hopefully no minutes more :( I had to eat dinner before my mom starts yelling, so theres a pause.
I think it's one of my best looking, fastest drawings ever. Well, maybe because I did a few doodles before I even started, so I knew what to add and draw on the new file.

Photoshop 7.0 and a Wacom.
Well, atleast I tried making her hold a spray paint, and then the words satan on the wall behind her :P To show she's 'goth/emo' and doesn't want to fit in with the average others.
