How do I stop the Attribute Editor from popping up in the space for the Channel Box/Layer Editor or is there a good way to toggle between the two?

Ctrl-A toggles between the two.

But in Preferences->Interface you can set the Attribute Editor to open in a separate window, which keeps the Channel box in place.
