View Full Version : Black Manga Medusa
Mr Fudge 01-01-2003, 03:38 AM Modelled today. Roughly 7 hours work.
Obviously still very much a WIP.
My first attempt at getting some typically Manga type facial proportions. I think Maybe the eyes are too slanted/rotated. Not sure.
Basically I want feedback on the shape the head is taking.
I’m gonna go for a stylised yet realistic look. Kinda like that Playstation add from a few years back with that girl whose head proportions were all whacked.
Any other feedback welcome. Will post more tomorrow if I get a chance.

Wow impressive model and texture ! really disturbing and scary!!:surprised
Frankly i do think the eyes are slighly too rotaded not too much but slightly.
I am not exactly able to determine it from this point of view, but i think you should reshape the back of the head because it seems just a bit flat.
But overall it has a really interesting style so it really depends on what you want to achieve exaclty !
Cheers! It's great :airguitar :airguitar

looks good so far. I would make the eyes bigger..manga eyes are huge compared to the rest of the face..also the lower portions of the face...the chin and the jaw should be smaller..make the nose smaller too.

tsk tsk :shame: you have a great model going and its FULL of character, why spoil it by going mainstream anime with it? Don't get me wrong, I am probably the biggest anime fan on the boards but this is great because it looks so unique.
IMHO you should leave the nose as is, the eyes yes are a little curvy though. Love the lips. And even though you have obviously mirrored the texture, the only thing about it that bothers me is the nose - if you can get rid of that slightly darker line and mix the lighter tones, it will look even better.
It freaked me out the first time I saw it, but its also beautiful. I think a profile view is needed to critique the shape of the head, though - from here it looks like the eyes are protruding out of the face too much (like she is a tad bugeyed). If I am right then bringing the eyes back into the skull just a smidgen would probably set her off.
If you still decide to go ahead with the anime look, a revision of the cg scenes in Chrono Cross (for PSX) might help. They are perhaps the finest "anime in 3d" I have seen.

At this juncture the texture is temporary. Will fix the symmetry issues once the modelling is complete.
I was knida flying blind with reagrds to the reference. I had a look but couldn't find anything very useful. I ended up with a profile of an oriental girls face. That is what prompted me to move the eyes so far forward. I knew it felt strange while I was doing it. I do agree though she is a bit too bugeyed at the mo. Must address the curvy issue too.
I will check out Chrono Cross.
Thanks for the feed back guys it always helps when someone else points out what you suspected all along....

Still need to alter the shape of the lower eyelid so it is more squared off.
Mainly just tweaked the geometry and textures today.

with a sort of undead texture and clouded eyes this could be damn scary, these sort of images with massive eyes scare the crap out of me , lol  :surprised :bounce:

Still to do,
I think I need to model a bit more detail into the nostrils.
Texture wise I must move the tear ducts up a touch. Extend and articulate the eyebrows.
Once the modelling is complete I will sort out the UV's.
This is just a screen grab so I used a texture map with specular highlights for the eyes. When I get around to doing a render I will model proper eyes and set up a decent material.
Finally I think the shape of the eyes is working. Anyone agree???
She is looking a lot more benign at the mo. Also looking quite Egyptian.
I think I will make some kind of snake headdress for her with a hooded cobra at the front.
Any glaring anomalies anyone notices let me know.
Thanks,
F

Hair and Eyelashes.
Hair is a pain.
Need to spend a day crafting the hair. But I have broken the back of it.
Still to do.
Add hair beads and a headress.

Those eyes are totally spiffy, and I like the whole look of the thing a lot... but the top of her head seems a bit too flat, and something odd is going on with her nose... also, why is the texture so black on the wings of her nose and the corners of her mouth? You might want to do something about that, it looks like she's smeared in those spots with black dirt. As for the hair... maybe there needs to be some more of it? Looks like you have just two rows of the stuff falling down from the very top of her head to cover it... like if she turned her head and the strands swung, there'd be baldness underneath.

I agree I need to do something to the nose. It looks a little turned up. I think pulling the ball down should fix that.
The reason the wings of the nose look so black is cos this is a screen grab not a render. That is how the shading looks with the default light in maya.
I made the hair by hand. I would love to have more of it but I'm not sure I have the patience for it. As it is, the hair object is hammering my pc.
I will add some hair to the scalp so that if she did swing her head it wouldn't look to bad.
Thanks,
F
