Okay, I'm not even sure how to ask this, but here I go.

I want to build some sort of mech robot, and I would like one of the arms to essentially transform into a gun, via a custom attribute.

How/Where do I begin? I'm not even sure how I begin modeling something that transforms, let alone setting it up on a Set Driven Key, sdk. (i am familiar with modeling and set driven keys--i've just never tried this)

Can someone point me in the right direction, tutorial or such --- or at least a better formed question so I can google / cgtalk search for it ?

a tutorial would be awesome... thanks in advance.

you can try on www.learningmaya.com (http://www.learningmaya.com)

i'm not sure is there a tutorial exactly about SDK, but pretty mutch in every tutorial for rigging you can find something about SDK

it doesn't have to be set driven key (though, this is what i imagine). and i don't think any rigging is neccessary for what I want to do, or is it? I have a couple of files at home, that essentially transform via a custom attribute, but I have no idea how to achieve this.

i tried searching "set driven keys" on LearningMaya.com --- nothing...

any more ideas? or perhaps a better term for what i'm asking...?
