View Full Version : HD Movie - Combustion, Fusion Shake ?
mnm|cg 04-17-2006, 11:33 PM There is a new upcoming movie, which is going to shot HD. Will be lots of space scenes etc.
And we are going to buy a compositing package, but not highend tools like flame or inferno..
I was wondering which of these three will suit better ?
I heard that Combustion can't handle with HD like the others..And Shake is more stable than Fusion ?

Fusion is a pretty great package , good keyer and compositing tools and feels good to use. The newer builds of version 5 are much more stable than when it first came out.
I can't comment on shake or combustion.

Pipeline questions do not always have easy anwers. I really think that the decision should be based on what platform you are running on, and what artists you have available. Any of the software you have listed will perform fine on HD "PROVIDED" you are running the right configuration.
Shake is OSx and Linux only
Fusion is windows only at present (linux to come)
Combustion runs on both platforms but seems faster and more stable on PC.
The real decision should also be influenced by which other apps you are attempting to integrate into you pipeline and the TYPE of shots your need to do.
is shake has very strong keying
combustions paint and tracking is very good
fusion has a very advanced 3d environment

I think a lot of it depends on what you'll need to do in post...and how familiar your team is if they are doing CG with intergrating your CG rendering into your compositor etc. Do you know how at all your team likes to work? Nodes...layers etc.
I can't stand combustion, but I do enjoy Fusion. The video training that came with my copy was VERY helpful as well and helped me get up to speed fairly quickly. That being said plenty of people get everything done with combustion.

Keep in mind that Fusion and Shake are node based and combustion is layer based.
As above, Shake is Apple only, so if you don't have Apple's set up then it may not even be an option!
I have been using an older version of Fusion at school lately and I am really liking it, although my comps are nowhere near HD/production level.
