This is a low poly character I made based upon a sketch I did a few days ago (look HERE (www.deadpanda.com/sketches/tortoisecolour.shtml) for the sketch). This character is intended to be riding a giant tortoise when it's entirely finished, but the basic character himself seems finished.

The model was produced in 3DS MAX 4.2, and the model consists of exactly 500 triangle polygons (a self inflicted limit). Any comments, critique or general opinions on this would be massively appreciated. ^_^

EDIT: fixed the link to my original sketch.

aaah awesome! It looks like that chibi-style!! :D I like it alot.. nothing to crit actually.. awesome skill, 500 tris are really good!

(this is chibi : http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/chibi/chibiart.htm )

looks quite hilarious and cute... can't wait to see the turtle! I doubt if you are aiming for the chibi style... I think the head would need to be a LOT bigger. Looks great as is.

My crits are that you can probably remap the hands. Then you can make the blobby hands into clenched fists, so he can really hold onto the saddle. Look at any Square game for the PSX for examples of this (especially Vivi from FFIX).

And also if you added a few triangles coming out of his hat (at front or back) you could give him a little indication of hair. With proper alphas I think it could give him a lot of extra character. ;)

I'm not sure he needs the eyebrows. You can't seem 'em in most of your shots and he looks quite hilarious when you can't see them. They look very defined as is, maybe make them blonde? to soften the overall look. Either that or just pull the brim of his hat down over his eyebrows?

Lastly his little hat there looks quite cute, but without the pompom it would look like a helmet, either way is fine I just wanted to mention it.

P.S. What texture res are you working with? since you seem hellbent on limits, and since the texture looks fairly low detail as it is, you may as well scale it down to a 128x128 or something.:scream: or smaller! hehe

I eagerly await the turtle! (what are their names?)

I think this character could be defined as chibi. The style on polykarbon is actually known as Super-deformed (or SD), which takes the stumpy cute style to a much more extreme level. Either way, I'm glad you find the character cute and appealing! ^_^

Hands... hmm, you think I should make them more clenched? What I currently have is a sort of semi-clenched hand, which I felt I could open up or tighten as necessary, allowing me to put the handle of the turtle reins into his palm a bit. I see what you mean about the FFIX chunky fist hands, but then I wouldn't be able to make the hand put on the object without intersecting the models. I'll play with this a little bit though, it's only a small change.

Eyebrows.... hmm, that's a good point. I think I will make them a little lighter, perhaps a tad thicker too, so that they look more simple and in line with the rest of the features. Good idea. ^_^

The hat was actually designed to look a little like a helmet, but actually a pom-pom wooly hat. Basically I wanted it to give the parallel of a warrior, but actually a small boy prepared with his hat. As for hair coming out from the front and back of the helmet, I'm not certain whether it would be a good idea. I'll try it out though, see how it looks (perhaps for one of the other characters in this project?) It's a good idea though, I can see it looking good, and I've been experimenting with alpha hair recently.

The texture map is 256x256 pixels, which I thought was a fairly modest texture for something 500 triangles. 128x128 would be a bit overkill I think, in this day and age... o_O I'm sure I could reduce it if I needed to.

The tortoise and boy don't have names yet! ^_^ I'll think of something soon... I'll finish the tortoise first though.

Thanks for the critique. I'm really glad you seem to like the model, it's probably my favourite piece to date. I just need to build the strength to make the tortoise and then start animating the tortoise (scary!)

I'm glad some of my comments were a little helpful. In all honesty tho it looks great as is, my other post was just my 2 cents... :wavey:

An update to this thread - I finishing making the tortoise to go with the little boy! ^_^ It weighs in under 1000 triangles, mainly used to keep it nice and rounded off, but also visable from all angles (even beneath - for when it rolls over).

What do you think? ^_^

This is a SWEET little character. The turtle is cool too. Composition on the renders looks good. Is this for a game or animation?

Thanks for the kind comments. ^_^ I'm glad you like the models and the characters!

Nephos, this is intended for a game, that's why I'm keeping the polycounts to something moderate (<1500 for both tortoise + boy). ^_^ It's early days yet (still yet to animate them, I have to learn bones... eek! any advice? o_o), but I'm happy to have built both of these models.

I didn't want to 'pose' the characters, but I wanted to show them interacting simply. I enjoyed doing the composition work for this.

Dude I wish I could help in the animation area but my skills are er umm lacking, lol. Maybe a simple Ik set would be best. Looking forward to seeing more.
