"Earlier this week, we mentioned that Ubisoft was dropping malware/software copy protection company Starforce. What began with their decision to drop Starforce from Heroes of Might and Magic V, ended when game software maker Ubisoft confirmed to 1UP today that it has reached a decision to find another copy protection software solution. Great news! I hope that more follow... Especialy after what StarForce did to the creators of Galactic Civilization 2

For example, we were quite disturbed to discover that the company that makes Starforce provided a working URL to a list of pirated GalCiv II torrents. I'm not sure whether what they did was illegal or not, but it's troubling nevertheless and was totally unnecessary.

I hope they go bankrupt! (edit: StarForce not the Game-Devs :) )

I don't think a game protection is worth all the problems starforce can bring you. I can't believe they were using it...

I wonder what the replacement of starforce will be. I'm hoping it would be some kind of "we trust the people who bought the game" and not something that is even more demanding and intrusive.

They must have actually seen a significant amount drop in sales of recent titles to make that move. Word of mouth about Starforce has been building up and rabid of late. An easy decision when looking at a gaming economy that is softening.

about time companies start to realize that anti-piracy measures hurt legit customers more then the ones that pirate them.

Its about time. I got SplinterCell with a graphics card and it worked on one of three PCs...
I dont get tho why people are actually willing to put up with the crap VALVe sends their way in the form of steam. Not only does the thing take ages to load but it also logs what you play, when you play it and who knows what more. I woudn't be surpised to find out that they actually log your browsing habits etc.
I find it sad that developers seem to find an interest in technologies like these because they end up hurting their own customers more than the guys getting it illegaly, with the copy protection already removed.

There will always be some form of Anti piracy measure. You can most likely count on the hardware and software industries working tighter together to eliminate the need for a software only solution.

I have no problems with copy protection, I think its a necessity no publisher gets around. The problem are anti piracy measures that only hurt legit owners of the game.
Take GTA3 as an example. I had the problem of tha game freezing for a few seconds again and again. The reason for that was the copy protection. Same in splinter cell: I couldnt play the game on my own computer because starforce woudn't let me... the list goes on.

I think a good example of well working anti piracy measures would be the PSP.
I find it sad they kill homebrew games with that too tho... but well... they'd be the first ones to allow it...

Yay!

Ok, so I have an anti-Starforce link in my sig, so you can probably guess that this makes me happy. I just hope more game devs do the same.
