View Full Version : Message for squidinc and everyone else
That Adrian Guy 12-31-2002, 10:17 PM I visit this forum almost religiously, and there isn't too much art being posted. (Atleast not as much as is being made by all of you)
So I ask:
Where's everyone's art at?
For example, I didn't know squidinc was much of an artist till I was blown away by his postings at renderosity. I RARELY check that site out.
...I know there's got to be a lot of C4D art floating the web, but where is it? And why aren't many sharing it here?
---This has got to be my least productive post, but I have to ask :scream:

:hmm: Fair comment. As for me I find as time goes on my scenes become longer and longer to complete :)

Unlike like my experience of max and maya users, not as many users around here using C4D are strictly hobbyists or students being trained in C4D, meaning a lot of their work is professional, not as sure here as in postforum, but I know it sor of applies here too. Most professionals have contracts about what they can or cannot share, and also many choose not toshare their professional work for may reasons, since they don't have a lot of hobby time they don't have a lot of independent work to share.
I finally have a chance to work on portfolio stuff and have a friend helping with website stuff so you'll see some stuff from me soon, but I never blame those that can't or choose not to share, its unfortunate but understandable.
I love to see new artwork as much as possible too, hence why I love the challenges so much, and now I have to leanr how this new challenge system works.:surprised

i've got a few images in my gallery... (although like Kai says some stuff i just can't show :/ ) but you've already seen i've posted stuff in the gallery here
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34731
and there are others... if you look through the gallery you notice that there are quite a few c4d artists work, but a lot of those poeple don't post all that often (and some not at all) in the actual c4d forum here  i don't know what's going on there.
i really gather that renderosity is where most c4d users put their stuff up... can't say i do or even visit there often... for some reason that site gives me a headache, the layout and the millions of badly put together poser and bryce scenes (not that i've got anything against poseer or bryce when they're used well) that you have to go through to get to the few gems.
anyhow poeple are a doin', i guess theyr'e just not a showin' here so much though:hmm:

I'm new to renderosity but I think it's a good repository of images.
You should sort for best rating to see the best images and you can enter only the cinema 4d side(as I do)
I've sent only an image to renderosity..............and I'm quite happy beacause people like it..... so I share it here for all the user don't surf renderosity
http://www.crosio.ch/images/lc4_2.jpg
the thing people like more is the light..........but it's another a cheap tricks again..........
The pillow is SLA, the remaining leather is bump I've taken from my real lc4.
I hope I can inspire as many artists do here and in renderosity.com!!

I agree with Kaiskai. Theres loads of stuff that I would love to post but cant cos my boss would break me into tiny pieces!

if you post some of your work, also in a low resolution, your boss should only be happy because you make a sort of marketing for your company.
I don't know if you remember the old gabocorp.com site, what happens to him if he would'nt publish is futuristic flash 3.0 site??
If I've to hire someone for some 3D works I know where to go. How I can choose a company/artist if I don't know how it works?
Why Brazil is so popular? And why finalrender is not so much popular. Maybe the marketing of finalrender was wrong? Maybe the images produced with the demo doesn't watermark the output?
I'm not a marketing expert, but I own a little company and I have some idea of marketing...........
Ciao

I totally agree with you claudio, and one thing I love about testing C4D is the chance to share the experiments and stuff from there. I also love the work I see done for brazil and such, but fact of life is that many companies and contracts are like that.
but the fact is a lot of clients don't like paying or selling things available for free. most 3d artists who post their films here on cgtalk won't have them shown on telivision simply because no broadcaster is going to pay to show a film that is viewable on the webfor free

You know my friend, if in TV there's a program who show me something about cinema 4d, also if they let me see only things I well know, I will blow out for happyness, because it's my field of interest..............
it's normal I will never pay for the Anders Schroeder(dform1shiftfunc.net) show reel, but if I have to pay for a video psychedelic production, I will ask Mr Schroeder to work for me.......
We can have different points of you and I accept your opinion but my idea is that "The more you show, the more you sell"
BTW I can be wrong, but I'm one of that who buy t-shirts, mug and so on about my favorite web site/artists/products..........and the only book about cinema 4d I own is Arndt 's book

Your getting me totally wrong I agree with you I'm just saying its a simple fact of life that what we would like is not always the reality, I'd love to share some of my other works but I can't unless you wanna pay the breach of contract fines which can be quite rediculously large, so I show things I do for testing and such, now I have time to do stuff for myself so I'll share it cause I can.

i think the point isn't about marketing yourself so much as what the client wants. a client who's paid you to produce some work for their product may have amny reasons why they don't want you to show that work "for free" on the boards or even in your own portfolio. you have to remember that when they pay for your work they're actually buying the rights to those images that you produce, so they no-longer belong to you.
some clients dont mind you showing some work, but you have to think of it like this. you know about stock images right? well you know there's royalty free, and there there's royalty paid images? the thing is if you sell an image to someone, be it an animation, a still or whatever, essentially you are producing royalty paid work. now you know how it is with this stuff... if you had to pay for the rights to use an image, you're most likely not going to want other people to go around using that image for free are you? of course there are situations where it's different, logos etc you want people to see, but for a lot of things, then no.
marketing yourself as an animator or artist is fine, but you have to respect the rights of the clients. they've spent the money to buy your work. so if you're going to show your own stuff then that's fine, but if you're going to show work for which someone else has paid, then you have to get their permission first after all even though you did it, it's no longer yours to show... it could be that they make money by showing your work (TV), or that it's an internal thing to a company, or some product, or illustrations in a book which they expect people to go out and buy... those sorts of things could adversly affect a companies value and it's products value, and if you break that NDA contract with your client you will end up feeling the wrath of the client... just look at what Lucas has done recently to some people who thought it might be nice to borrow star wars stuff... it's in the news even.
advertising yourself is well and good, but sometimes you just have to show things that aren't "sensitive".

yes, I agree with you.........I put that chaise longue model on 3dcafe for money and I will never publish the c4d file because of that.....................you know I will always share my c4d files.
But why I've to keep also the jpg for myself?? You're right when you say that if a customer asked me to reproduce a chaise longue I've to ask him before sharing anything............but........are you sure it's our situation?
Are you sure the most of the peope here do art for money?
the key of the thread is that there's not so many artworks posted as before..............and I don't thing it's the copyright the problem.

you're right everyone produces artwork for fun, but the other thing is on this board in particular (and on some others) the high standards that it takes to get noticed in the gallery put a lot of poeple off... i actually disagree with kaiskai, i think a lot of c4d users are hobbyists, and i think they don't post for fear of being ridiculed, which is silly as everyone has to start somewhere, and no-one should feel shy about posting, but i guess a lot of people do.
as for the image thing... yes that is our situation. the thing is it's what you sell as the finished product that the client buys... oh they pay in terms of your time, but without end product most of the time you're not oging to get paid. so while you're selling your c4d file and you're not going to post that, you're not selling the image (or at least you didn't sell the image itself to anyone, just the model). it's fine therefore for you to show the model. the trouble is if you had sold the image to a client, then the image belongs to them and you would need their permision before you could show it, also you wouldn't be able to sell the c4d file to others, if the client got wind of that they'd probably be a bit upset. after all they've paid for the sole rights to use that image of that unique model (even if they've not paid to own the mesh)... after all then someone else could quickly go and reproduce that image for free or the cost of your model (yup it's not the same as photography).

Ok, you're probably right but I still don't think the copyright's trouble is the problem here............maybe the fear is an answer, or maybe, it's just because we are on a forum and not on an artworks site.

I guess it's just like the old saying "Being a chef doesn't mean you want to cook when you get home" ...or it was something to that effect.
Regardless, I just have a hard time believing that people who are artists by trade aren't hobbyists at home. Maybe they're burned out when they get home...
I'll admit it, I'm a definitely a hobbyist -but if I was a pro, I'd still post pics I made for fun, even though I wouldn't get paid for it. Besides, the community as a whole benefits that way.
But it's nothing I'm going to be bothered by, I just wanted to see more eye candy within the forum.
...that's all = )

Interesting points there mdme_sadie. The aspect of this that concerns me is the intellectual property of not just the render - but of the job as a whole. In my case (exhibition design mainly - plus a bit of interior architectural and display pos stuff) - we go through the design process of designing a structure that fulfills the clients brief/aims to the best of our ability. Exhibition design particularly is an area of trouble - more often than not the client wants to use an upcoming show to launch a new product/system - obviously they would rather do this on the press-day of the exhibition in front of the worlds media instead of on the c4d section of cgtalk.com!
Also, the sums of monies involved cant be underestimated. One of our best jobs is a design & build contract for a stand that goes goes to around 4 motor shows around europe - probably worth around £180,000 a year. They want to make a big impression for this sort of cash. My visual of this stand costs a fraction of the total contract value and its just not worth posting up just in case it causes any bother! It just aint worth it!
