Awesome!!!
Are you making a game? Is it commercial or a hobby-game?

Asorson
01-01-2003, 01:20 AM
For me it is commercial because I am being payed to do the art, but I do not yet know what the final fate of the game will be. It may end up being used just as a demo, or perhaps more. Just depends on how much work we decide to put into it.

Here are the texture flats if you're interested. Each of these characters was completed in about 10 hours apiece from initial concept design to final textured model. They aren't perfect but given the time and budget restrictions I'm quite happy with how they turned out :)

I do. I own the rights to this artwork, and license them non-exclusively.

Wires and other renders will be up on my website in a couple weeks when I complete the redesign.

okay then are these people who are paying you for a "non-exclusive" license allowed to use you artwork to make money using it?

Sorry lil D, I don't have any bigger renders right now. But if I get a couple free minutes I'll render some out for you ;)

Billy: Yes. In a nutshell I own the artwork, I can use it for any purpose that I wish, commercial or non-commercial. For a fee I license the rights to use this artwork commercially only for a specific purpose (ie: this game demo). So my employer has the right to use this artwork commercially only for this game and it's related marketing materials. If however they wanted to do something else such as a comic book, or a toyline, they would not be able to use these characters :)

Nice shorts! lol, seriously you can tell he has an early - Bart like instigator feel to him.

I think the models would be great for a game of some sort, I'm not sure about the colour of his hat and shorts. I am new at modelling though and can barely texture, but that's what I see.

Namroth: In 3dstudio Max under customize/preferences check "Dont alias against background". Also to get that extra "pop" set your anti-aliasing filter to Michell-Natrivelli with the settings Blur: 0 Ringing: .75 (A technique I learned from my friend Rod Stafford while rendering sprites for the Game Boy Advance).

Great characters. Im digging the dear. One thing that i noticed about the main character and hopefully im not alone on this one. It kinds of looks like a beefy homer simpson. (Of course changed in the face a bit) But when i glanced at it thats what i thought it was.

Good stuff though, im liking the tree alot as well.

Thanks for the support everyone, I'm really enjoying this project. I have worked on a number of AAA titles but that can't really duplicate the joy of seeing a game that is almost entirely your creation (Visually speaking of course, Gil is reponsible for the game design and programming).

I am currently working on designing and creating four new characters for this game so look for them to be posted soon.

I agree...there is something special that hits home when you work on a project that is almost soley your own. The same is similar for me and the Realism anatomy textbook....its like a little peice of you has been brought into existance for all too see. Its kind of interesting and rare when projects like this are done soley by one person.....tougher too!

Keep up the great work my friend!

You can see the designs as well as the wireframes for these characters at my website: http://www.erikasorson.com in the realtime characters section.

These are actually not that low poly for me. Currently I am working on a couple of RTS games where character polygon ranges are between 300-500. I love the challenge of squeezing the most out of a very limited poly budget.

Great stuff, Eric! Thanks for sharing the outstanding examples of low-poly modelling. You've got a great cartoony style going here, I can't wait to see these latest ones painted.

One question: on the snail wire you seem to have wasted the center line...it's all flat going across, did you change that for the other renders...or is it just unavoidable because you want a symmetrical map...or am I mistaken and it's not flat?

Actually I work for myself as an independant contractor to a variety of companies and individuals. I did work as a studio employee for 4 years, but I like operating independently much better. I prefer to manage my own affairs and work habits and it gives the opportunity to work on different projects in different industries instead of just working on one game for 18 months straight.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I'll post the textures soon. The seam at the top of the snail was indeed put there for ease of UV mapping.

Thanks Teckneil, I really love working with low polycounts. I feel like it adds another dimension of challenge to the whole 3d modeling thing which I have been doing for as long as I can remember.

I was thinking about it the other day and believe it or not I have probably modeled close to 200 3d characters in my lifetime, over 100 of them professionally. I worked on a GBA game in 2002 where I modeled 60+ characters in six months (you can see about half of them on my website in the high poly models section).

By adding that extra dimension of a restrictive polycount it kind of breathes new life into modeling for me and I am taking advantage of it while I can, because I knowin a couple of years game polycounts are gonna be through the roof!!

I'd love to do an interview if asked :D I did sort of an interview/profile thingy recently for Gamasutra.com, you can see the article here: http://www.gamasutra.com/galleries/visual_art/erik_asorson/index.htm

If you are interested in reading a little philosophy and maybe some practical info check out my collumn at CGWorks, Game Artist's Perspective. The link is in my sig. I'll be putting up issue 6 sometime today or tommorow, soon as I finish these textures! :P Allright, back to work for me.

So far the game has a free version with 4 level in it for you to enjoy (and if you liked them, feel free to support me by purchasing the next 15 from my website).

I hope you'll enjoy playing a game which its graphics you've seen being made from the start.
