gills 12-31-2002, 09:39 PM cant believe I have enough courage to post here....
just recently found out about these forums. and everyone is such a pro - so I can actually get good advice from you guys.
i consider myself a n00b at 3dsm, been usin it for about 3 months - and learned countless tutorials.....
anyhow, this is AUDREY II from little shop of horrors. I consider it my best piece yet, but would love advice from you guys, on the model, the scene, and the render aspect of it.
modeled and rendered in 3dsm 5

hey gills, lookin good, but... the DOF is a bit weird looking, or whatever that blurry outline is, also the texture on its head seems to have creases right there in the middle like the texture is set to spherical map, try using gradients and procedurals you shouldn't get any nasty seams , also where are the teeth is this thing gonna gum people to death? other than that its a good start keep it up

yea, thanx, dont know why exactly i threw on the DOF.
from all the refernces I've used, the AUDREY II plant actually doesnt have teeth - he/she swallows people whole.
thanx for the advice on the spherical mapping, changed it to box - and got rid of those nastly lines - however, also completely changed the look of my gradient texture, so back to the drawing board on that one....
also, i really am a noob - i just figured out the other day how to do multi-sub object texturing in 3dsm, so now i can actually make the mouth red and the rest of the head greenish...

That was one crazy fun plant. The work looks good. Juts keep at it. For 3 months that is excellent. As time goes by it will only get better.
squidinc gave some good advice, not much more to add. One thing is I think you can make the scene more dramatic by showing us a larger version of Audrey 2,that's what everyone would really like to see this plant as. Just have him sit on top of that table, overcrowding it,with the table cracking from all it's weight. Have the shot come from a lower angle to convey more size from the gigantic plant as well,at least in one of your shots. I think you should just keep plugging along,it is not far off from being very good. Keep :wip: :wip:
Show us an update soon.

Well, that's much more than what I was able to do after 3 months of 3dsmax ;)

The modeling looks pretty good, but I think the textures could use some work. The leaves around the head also need a little more variety in size and shape. Also try playin around with the DOF Blur effect more.
Its looking pretty good so far

Max5 comes with some really great tutorials on the UV Unwrap tool. It's in the last section under "New Material and Rendering Tools" - I think that you should check those out and then reapproach the texturing...
but not before you address the inside of the mouth with some geometry! Hollow it out and give it some dimension, and then it won't look so much like carved wood. Does the original plant have teeth?

The leaves sorta bend like metal there... Work on those and maybe make the mouth a little bit more round, there are no flat surfaces in nature.
