Here's my first real try at anything organic..
any idea how I can improve her? (I haven't done any textures and hair yet, i'm still working on the geometry)

The model is based on some images of Range Murata (he did Blue Submarine no. 6)...

(older images of her progress here (http://www.cgchat.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11250&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) )

an update:

http://www.renzerispens.com/images/crap/head/head render17 wire.jpg

I think I'll remove a ring of edges arount the mouth... seems like this model doesn't need that many (like the one in the Joan of Arc tutorial..)
Any idea what the best way is for me to make the eyebrows and lashes? Will the way I made them now (seperate objects) cause problems when making facial expressions (should I merge them or rebuild them in the headmesh?)

Renzu,

This is starting to look good.

What program do you use?

Done with 3dsmax 5, poly modelling with meshsmooth (2 iterations).

Here's the latest update, I think it's now time to start texturing, maybe some slight tweaks to remove the last errors in the geometry (like hairpolys intersecting).
(Some strange artefacts in the render btw, not sure how that happened)

Guys, I want to make her smile and look at stuff, but how do I change her expressions? I'm pretty new to max, and I heard things about 'morph targets' and using bones, but I'll need some good tutorial on this I think, because I have no clue on how to do it :( Anybody got a link that will get me going?? I'm thinking about a nice smile, maybe even a blink ;) Maybe I should've modeled her in the right pose in the first place??
Oh, and thanks for the compliments, much appreciated!

Just the start of texturing.. project isn't dead! For now I only have the diffuse texture in place.. I'm not going to do a bump texture, since that's no use in a 'cartoon' character imo.
Eyes will be replaced by 'real' eyes and hair also needs textures.

Quite like the eyes as they are, but the eyelashes may look
better black?

Renzsu

yeah, i'll make them black when I'll start texturing them. for now it's just a temp material

Hey I like her. But don't make those eyes too realistic. Stay to the anime style.
As for morphing : you just create different expressions for her head and then morph between them to animate between them

Here's a very simple tut : http://www.taffix.com/Tutorials/Morph/index.htm
But I don't think this is best way, I remember doing it differently. But it's been a long time since I used Max. Try google.

If you just want another expression for a still only change your mesh.

Here's a better tut on morphing http://www.anticz.com/morphy.htm

Cool :) Thanks for the links!
I'm indeed not planning on animating her, but I thought maybe the morph modifier will make it easier to make an expression (will save all the trouble of moving all the vertices myself?)

No way. How should it? You're the artist, you create the expression you want. Be thankful for it. :p

true ;) oh well, i'll see how it goes... hopefully I can go back to the low poly version to do the expression, since I'm texturing the high-poly version at the moment...

That should work if you unwrap the uv for the low poly version. You really should apply all mapping and morphing etc. before the meshshmooth. This way its easier to change things later.

heh.. I didn't know that. Well, it shouldn't influence the textures I already made right? I'll try finishing those first and then I'll go back to the low poly version, map that and start working on the morph bits... Thanks for the tip!

No, textures are ok, as long as the mapping puts them in the same place as before. Maybe some slight stretching may occur after smoothing, depending on how clean your base mesh is. (try to use mostly 4 sided polys, so meshsmooth splits up better)

Nice job. But how did you get that soft look of the skin???? Looks fabulous.

Renzsu
01-05-2003, 02:36 PM
that must be because of the lighting ;) I'm using a pretty strong skylight and a somewhat weaker spotlight. But now that I'm using a specularity map the image is starting to get a bit more shine... I'll see if I'll leave it in the final image or not...

update: time for eye action:

The thing is... will I use 'real' eyes, like in this photoshop modified render or the cartoony eyes?? The more I look at them, to more I think it may be nice to do...

I like the realistic eyes better myself...why stick to the mold...break it...and see what happens...well done I might add:thumbsup:

I hope you guys don't mind me posting another update: The new eyes are in place (I may need to adjust the texture of the iris, but for now I'm happy with it).
I used a couple of tutorials:
for the eyes: http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/59
for the positioning of the eyes (the last part of the page): http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorials/max/expeyes/expeyes.asp

ok, here she is :)

Amazing. But, in the end is she supposed to be a porcelain doll or a real person? I am asking because now it looks like a porcelain doll. The hair looks like it is made out of clay...

To have a job, finally some money to upgrade, but not enough time to work on the face ;)
Oh well, so I removed my site for a little 'teaser', since I'm working on my new portfolio which I'll put online..

Let me know what you think of it by clicking here (http://www.renzerispens.com) ;)
