View Full Version : WIP - Skateboard Complete
fourd 12-31-2002, 05:50 PM Well, I've finished the modeling on the skateboard in the LW forum, so I'll post the deck here.
I'm still working on the storefront that this will sit in, and I've been asked to do some animation as well, so I need to model a simple dude for the deck.
Let me know any crits.:)

you forgot the screws on top of the board! The board should also be slightly dipped down the middle, theyre not perfectly flat.

I knew it didn't look 100% for some reason, couldn't place it.
Thanks

tail and nose need to be longer
and actaully, a lot of modern boards are flat.
also some skaters put in the screws under the grip tape to get the look youve achieved here. so its not necessarily wrong.
edges need to be rounded - skateboards have radiused edges. also the kingpin of the truck needs to be lower - the axle sits higher than the kingpin [nut] otherwise, when you grind you slam hard. esp on a 10 stair.
go to an online skate store [dont ask me where, use google], you will find measurements for a skateboard there - it will list the length, width, as well as the length of the nose and tail separately. or a skatemag. the length of the nose [or tail] is the distance from the tip to the first bolt.

Actually I got the dimensions from my son's many skateboards. The deck and wheels are made to scale.
I didn't add the screws to the top yet. I know when we replace the grip tape, we remove the trucks, that way later on they can be tightened when needed..It's easier.
As far as rounding the edges. I can do that. Thanks for the tip.
"also the kingpin of the truck needs to be lower"
Good catch, thanks.
Here's an update though, I added the little kickers on the side and did round the board out a tad, but all my sons are flat. I got the kicker idea from my sone's new Shorty's board.

Things to do:
-Add screws to top of board
- Lower kingpins
-Round edges.
Thanks

i noticed the 'kickers' [wheel wells]. nice touch...
on some boards they are more pronounced, like on yours. i suspect your son is fairly young - the board you have made displays many of the design characteristics of the smaller boards made for the younger set. on other boards the wheel wells are less pronounced as they get in the way of foot control on intricate flip tricks. the solution is to have smaller wheels which dont create wheel bite.
i think then, its the shape of the nose/tail that is throwing the board off... usually less rounded, flat almost straight sides until the last 1/3 where the curving begins.
as far as screws under the grip, yeh its more of a 'pro' thing - byt he time the grip gets worn [or the deck for that matter] the boards already completely toast and the pro has 10 or 20 stockpiled up anyways.
well, i guess you can tell im a bit of a skater

about those screws: You could also just claim it's one of those Innerlocks :)
If you don't know what I'm talking about, then I'll try to explain a bit.
Innerlock is a kind of board where you only screw the screws in the bottom 'cause it has a bolt (not sure it's called that) in the board. So it takes less time to change trucks etc. Nice board in my opinion :)
Got one myself, hehe :p

Thanks for the great tips and in-sight folks. I'm not a sk8r myself, although I am an old-school inline agressive sk8r from the early 90's.
I do love watching the x-games and any aggressive sport that comes to town or on TV. I consider myself pretty hip when it comes to sk8boards though, after all, I'm in the shop about once a week with my son, picking out a new deck or bying clothes :)
Anyways, you all have great tips and some things I din't even know about, I've never seen a board with the bolts for one, and I've seen many catalogues and seen many boards. I'll have to look into that one.
I did accomplish getting the kingpin lowered, although I couldn't get it all the way below the truck axle, it'll have to do until I model another truck assembly though.
I'm also going to model a few extra deck styles as well. The wells on the deck now are overly pronounced, the Shorty deck's don't make them that pronounced, but if you noticed the paint on the deck isn't a Shorty job anyways, I forget:)
ANyways, I'll post some more l8r.
Thanks everyone.

Mabey make it a bit more concave, and thicken the deck a little, it's reallly thin.

Thanks for the pics. II got plenty of decks to look at, but the pics will be a nice reference for while I'm at work.
Thanks again.

Well, I've reworked the trucks. What a pain, trying to keep them smooth and flowing. The main point was to get the kingpin above the axle and give the boar some more height from the center of the axle.
Comments?

Wow, it's starting to look really good
Something 'bout the textures: If you want to make a picture of a new sk8board your textures are very good. But if you're planning an making an animation or show a sk8boarder with the board etc. you need to add a lot of dirt and scratches and so on. For example: after 5 minutes sk8ing you're not able to see the logo on the wheels. You could only know which colour it had.

i think the deck is a little narrow and you should really add some concave to it. other than that, looks good to me. is it just me or does anyone else also think that the deck is too low and close to the wheels. ok, some time ago also made a skateboard - ELEMENT...

I started texturing the used skateboard. I still have a ways to go on it, and I'm having a little trouble with it, particularily the wheels, but here's the thread in the texture forum if someone wishes to offer there help.
I'm trying to use procedureals mainly, that way I can learn the layering in LW, but I do have a few grunge maps ready just in case.

Thanks for any insight or help.
